ALGIERS – The National Delegate to the protection and promotion of childhood, Meriem Cherfi said Thursday in Algiers that Algeria was among “the pioneer countries” in terms of child protection, and through the efforts granted, including legislative.
In a statement on the sidelines of his visit to the headquarters of the brigade to protect minors in Bouzareah (Algiers), Ms. Cherfi said that “Algeria has made no child protection matters giant”, evoking legal procedures “developed” which made Algeria one of the “pioneer countries” on the matter, including legislative.
Referring to his visit to the headquarters of the Brigade, she said that the visit aimed to “inquire into the field application of the law, is part of the periodic visits of the National Body for protection and childhood promotion (ONPPE) to all institutions and centers responsible for receiving and child protection. ”
Mme. Cherfi recalled that the concerning child protection provides for the protection of the child offender during the preliminary investigation, “special procedures including the fixing of the custody period to 24 hours in the presence of the lawyer and civil responsibility “and” medical and technical control of the filmed hearing of child victims of sexual abuse “.
In this regard, she added, “the audiovisual listening to children victims of sexual abuse is one of the important mechanisms applied in the larger countries, which aim to spare the child victim to make his statements more once, which can cause him psychological fatigue and repetitive trauma. ”
On this occasion, Ms. Cherfi praised the efforts of the High Command of the National Gendarmerie in this field and its concern to apply the law, as well as the efforts of National Security, which form part of “coordination effort between all actors and stakeholders in the field of child protection. ”
In another context, the national delegate revealed that 1225 reports of violation of children’s rights have been registered since January, after which the ONPPE intervened in coordination with all concerned sectors.
On the occasion, she revealed the organization of several training courses during the month of May and during June, which will include several actors in the field of protection of child rights.
On the other hand, Ms. Cherfi revealed “the preparation of a new program, based on an agreement between the ONPPE and the Economic, social and environmental, on the program budget for the child, coinciding with the celebration of childhood holidays “, as the national day of the child, coinciding July 15.
Finally, she said that the annual report on the situation of children in Algeria “will be presented shortly to the President of the Republic.”
