GENEVA- Algeria has been elected as a member of the Committee on Assistance to Antipersonnel Mine Victims for a two-year term (2021-2022).
The election took place during the proceedings of the 18th Assembly of States Parties to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, held from November 16 to 20, 2020.
The Committee which members are Algeria, Ecuador, Thailand and Sweden aims to uphold the States Parties’ efforts by presenting conclusions and recommendations with regard to the achievements made and the shortcomings to be addressed in order to consolidate assistance to victims.
The Committee’s members also sit on the Cooperation Committee responsible for monitoring the activities included in the implementation of the convention.
Through this election, the States Parties recognize the pioneering role of Algeria in the fight against anti-personnel mines and taking into charge of victims dating from the national liberation war.
As a reminder, the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-personnel Mines has entered into force in Algeria on April 9, 2002.
Since 1997, no less than 164 countries have ratified or acceded to the convention.
