Drinking water production system in the province of Blida has been supported since the beginning of the current year with the entry into service of 45 new water wells, which contributed to “alleviating the water deficit in the province” to meet the population’s needs of this vital substance, according to the Director of Water Resources and Irrigation.

Abdelkrim Allouach indicated that as part of improving the distribution of potable water, especially in light of the decrease in the volume of daily production, the production system has been supported since the beginning of this year by 45 new water wells, with a total production capacity of 32,000 cubic meters per day.

As part of the same effort, 19 water wells were rehabilitated during the same period, which enabled the production of an additional 6,000 cubic meters, according to the same official, pointing to the programming of the completion of new production plants whose works will be launched soon and which consist of 32 new water wells, in addition to the rehabilitation of 28 other wells.

In this regard, Allouach stressed that the province of Blida recorded this summer “ inability to meet the population’s drinking water needs,” a situation that continues to date due to the drop in the level of groundwater on which the province depends by 80 percent.

He also pointed out that the Atlas Blidi springs, which are among the sources of this vital resource, record the same shortage due to the scarcity of rainwater, as their rainfall decreased in the province this year from 700 mm to 400 mm.

According to the Director of Water Resources, the decrease in the volume of water transferred from the “Mazfran” pumping station in Algiers to the Beni Tamou pumping station to only 10,000 cubic meters, contributed significantly to increasing the fluctuations in the supply of drinking water.

In the face of this situation, the project of the seawater desalination plant in Douaouda (Tipaza), which will supply the province as a first stage with 100,000 cubic meters, remains the only solution to eliminate this problem and cover the needs of the population in a comfortable way, according to the same official.
