Over USD 93 million will be saved by Algeria thanks to the production of 37 pharmaceutical products locally, in addition to the registration of 16 biosimilar and first generic medicines, the Ministry of Pharmaceutical Industry said in a report.
This document indicates the local production, during the period from 1 January to 31 May 2021, of 37 new pharmaceutical products, formerly imported, i.e. an expected saving on the bill of imports reaching USD 16.34 million a year.
During the same period, 16 biosimilar and first generic medicines were registered, according to the source, a drop in medicine imports totaling USD 76.78 million, for one year of consumption.
In this regard, Algeria could save USD 93.12 million for every year of consumption, which was made possible thanks to the prioritization of the registration of generic medicines and similar biotherapeutic products” undertaken by the Ministry of Pharmaceutical Industry in order to deal with monopolistic situations,” underlined the source.
The ministry expects, in its document, an overall import bill that will not exceed €1.2 billion, i.e. a provisional saving of €800 million for the current year.
