ALGIERS- Algerian ships participating in the bluefin tuna fishing campaign, for the current year 2021, have started to return to the homeland after they succeeded in catching their total quota, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Fisheries and Fishery Products today, Wednesday.
The statement indicated that the fishing campaign for live bluefin tuna, which ended on July 10, culminated in catching the total quota allocated by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas “ICAAT” to Algeria, estimated at 1,650 tons.
This year’s fishing campaign, in which 21 ships carrying the national flag participated, was launched on May 26 and was scheduled to end on July 1. However, the weather conditions in the fishing area, which are limited to international waters between Tunisia, Italy and Malta, led to the extension of the fishing period by an additional ten days after the approval of the International Committee “ICAAT”, which allowed Algerian ships to fish all their quota.
The statement also indicated that, every year, preparations for the tuna fishing campaign are coordinated with the Ministry of Interior, Local Communities and Urban Planning, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Defense, to facilitate the departure process of ships from ports and navigation in territorial waters.
The fishing ships embarked on the journey back home under “normal” conditions, according to the same source, which pointed out that the bluefin tuna fishing campaign for this year was organized for the second time in a row in a special health condition characterized by the spread of the Corona virus.
This health circumstance required coordinated work between the Ministry of Fisheries and Fishery Products with the Ministry of Health, Population and Hospital Reform to take a number of health measures before the ships depart and return, by providing health control for all the ship’s crew and imposing a quarantine for sailors in their homes, while ensuring a strict medical supervision.
