Algerian Energy Company (AEC), the group in charge of developing desalination projects in Algeria, has signed a contract with two local companies to build three desalination plants with a combined capacity of 150,000m3/d, according to local reports.
The plants, located in Bordj El Kiffan (Algiers), El Marsa (Algiers) and Corso (Wilaya of Boumerdès), will be developed by Cosider Canalisations and Société Nationale de Génie Civil et Bâtiment (GCB), and will help alleviate water restrictions due to local drought conditions.
AEC and GCB are both subsidiaries of Sonatrach, Algeria’s state-owned oil company, while Cosider Canalisations is a private company with experience in hydraulics, water, and wastewater treatment.
The announcement was scant on details (notably the capacity of the plants, the technology selected, and how they will be procured), but it signals a departure in how Algeria is approaching desalination, with greater involvement of national companies and less reliance on international expertise.
