President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune confirmed on Sunday evening, the state’s determination to absorb the money of parallel market through several means and mechanics, most notably via Islamic banking.
In this context, he stressed the need to open a dialogue with the owners of these funds as it became a well rooted phenomenon, which dates back to the stage of opening up the space for private imports at the beginning of the 1990s, a step that was not accompanied by the necessary control.
“This economic phenomenon was created by the state and strengthened during the civil war then developed to reach now 10 thousand billion DA”, he said.
Responding to a question on whether this action was considered as an “amnesty”, Mr. Tebboune considered that “it is part of the rules of the game”, without giving further details given the “confidentiality of the file”.
However, the President of the Pepublic ruled out changing the national currency as a solution to attract the cash mass circulating in the parallel market, considering that this would create long queues and complicate the daily life of citizens.
