The placement in recent months of some Algerian products on foreign markets has boosted non-hydrocarbon exports (NHE) and increased their volume.
Fertilizers and mineral, chemical and nitrogen products are among the main products exported with an increase of 70%, said the director general of foreign trade at the Ministry of Trade and Export Promotion, Khaled Bouchlaghem. He also cited steel products whose exports have risen sharply, earning USD 600 million in revenue in recent months.
The same official also mentioned the export of non-organic chemicals with an increase of 200% and mineral, agricultural and agrifood products. This increase in NHE, experts explain, is due simply to the concentration of 4 families of so-called emerging export products, which are iron and steel, fertilizers, cement and sugar.
Exports of petrochemical products alone exceeded $ 400 million compared to $ 100 million in the same period of 2020.
Overall, exports of mineral and chemical nitrogen fertilizers are in the order of $ 618 million, an increase of 52.4% compared to the same period of the year 2020, indicate statistics from the Ministry of Commerce. . Mention is also made of the breakthrough of steel products which, barely two years ago, did not appear on the list of goods intended for.

It is the work of the Tosyali company which exported for an amount of 350 million dollars. Exports of this product were around $ 21 million in 2020. The increase is, therefore, remarkable. Cement is also one of the products that have emerged and whose export value has exceeded 100 million dollars.
Ditto for exports of food products which increased to 287 million dollars, an increase of 37% over one year. Those of sugar increased by 55.5% to reach 206 million dollars. An obvious shortfall is observed, on the other hand, for manufactured products whose exports increased to 141 million dollars, or a rate of 7%.
The increase of 95.55% of NHE is explained, therefore, by emerging products from new investments made in Algeria. The rise in fertilizer exports was helped by the start of a revival of the world economy which created demand.
In addition, the prices of these products are closely linked to the price of oil and gas in international markets. That said, it is imperative to broaden the base of exportable products.
This diversification involves the launch of national and foreign investment projects (FDI). This, as a consequence, will allow exporters to realize significant amounts in their export operations.
Algeria’s non-hydrocarbon exports have exceeded $ 3 billion since the start of the current year. Much hope is placed on the performance of exporters so that this amount will reach 4 to 4.5 billion dollars by the end of the year, as projected by the President of the Republic. According to Mr. Bouchlaghem, the rate of NHE reached 12% of the overall rate of national exports.
