The United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution to review the functioning of the revitalized resident coordinator system, including its funding modalities, paying tribute to Algeria’s outstanding role and contribution to this process.
On Thursday, the UN General Assembly adopted, by consensus, the resolution on the review of the functioning of the revitalized resident coordinator system, “co-facilitated” by the permanent representatives of Algeria, Sofiane Mimouni and Denmark, Martin Herman. During the session devoted to the adoption, Member States were keen to pay special tribute to Ambassador Sofiane Mimouni, at the end of his mission in New York, for his outstanding work and contribution to the work of the United Nations, including in the context of the reform of the United Nations Development System.
Speaking on the occasion, the Danish ambassador said that thanks to the efforts of diplomat Sofiane Mimouni in his capacity as co-facilitator of this important and difficult process, a consensus was reached, which allowed the adoption of a resolution of the General Assembly that should contribute to strengthening the revitalized system of resident coordinators, including its funding arrangements which remain an essential element for the success of this reform.
The General Assembly’s ambition is to ensure sufficient, predictable and sustainable funding for the revitalized resident coordinator system, with the objective of filling the financial gap that has existed since the system was set up. The adoption of this resolution, by consensus, marks the crowning of Algeria’s efforts and its undeniable contribution to the work of the UN.
The text also reflects the support of the international community to the reform process initiated by the UN Secretary General, Mr. Antonio Guterres, in particular the reform of the United Nations Development System which should contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals, the same source added.
