Algerian researcher Yasmine Belkaid received Sunday Robert Koch Award 2021, one of the most prestigious scientific awards in Germany, for her ground-breaking research on microflora and the immune system, German Robert Koch Institute posted on its website.
The Algerian researcher was honoured at a ceremony in Berlin for her groundbreaking research on the importance of microscopic bacteria for the immune system. She was awarded the prize for her groundbreaking research on the importance of microscopic bacteria for the immune system, as well as the role of gut microscopic tissue in the creation of microflora and its effects on infectious and inflammatory diseases.
“Yasmin Belkaid’s research has shown conclusively how the bacteria that colonize our intestines and skin control our gut bacteria and our immune system and thus help us fight off infectious agents as well as accept food as a defensive agents.” added the same Institute.
Yasmine Belkaid, Algerian researcher, born in 1968 in Algiers. The researcher also obtained a master’s degree at the University of Science and Technology Houari Boumediene, before continuing her postgraduate studies in France.
She worked as a researcher at the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. She also supervised the Microelement programme and is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania.
The Robert Koch Foundation, established in 1907, is a non-profit organisation. The Foundation aims to promote medical development and basic scientific research in the field of infectious diseases. The Foundation is also involved in similar projects to solve problems related to medicine and hygiene.
The institute announced that Yasmine Belkaid received her award together with German professor Andreas Bümler for his research in the field of gut bacteria and the immune system.
