The countries participating in the Sixth Summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, affirmed today, Tuesday in Doha, their determination to strengthen energy security in the world in their capacity as “reliable” suppliers of natural gas, in order to meet the increasing global demand for energy.

In a final statement approved after the proceedings of the 6th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Forum, in the presence of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the members of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum reiterated their determination to strengthen global energy security as “reliable” suppliers of natural gas in order to meet the growing global demand for Energy, while recognizing the pivotal role of natural gas in meeting global energy needs and in achieving the United Nations sustainable development goals.

In this regard, the member states of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum stressed “the importance of coordination and cooperation within and among member countries and dialogue between producers, consumers and other relevant actors, in order to promote international cooperation aimed at ensuring the sustainability and continuity of gas markets.”

The importance of long-term gas and LNG contracts as well as reasonable and stable prices in order to support the continuity of investments in the vital global gas industry was also discussed in this final statement.

In the same context, the participants emphasized the positive contributions of the use of gas to improve air quality and mitigate the effects of climate change in accordance with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement, stressing the “vital” importance of continuing investments and developing natural and gas resources through the implementation of facilities that would ensure energy security and appropriate energy systems.

Towards follow-up investments to cover the growing needs:

Inspired by previous statements at the Gas Exporting Countries Forum Summit, the Forum members decided to promote natural gas as “abundant, accessible, pure and reliable energy” and as a quality fuel to meet the growing global energy needs” that would combat climate change and improve the quality of air.

They also decided to pursue investments and develop natural gas resources while encouraging “insightful” energy policies that include natural gas as a reliable and flexible energy for energy production.

Meanwhile, the forum members expressed their “deep concern” and “disapproval” of “unilateral restrictions imposed without the approval of the United Nations Security Council against member states, which would negatively affect the development and trade of gas,” in addition to “the application of laws from abroad and from national organizations” against member states.

The member states also expressed their “concern over the use of the climate agenda to perpetuate disparities, include discriminatory practices and the recourse to protectionist measures, which constitute a direct violation of global trade rules.”

The heads of state and government also expressed their continued collective action to overcome the negative consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic in order to guarantee gas supplies and expressed their satisfaction with Algeria’s proposal to host the seventh summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum in 2023.

Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago as wells as Venezuela participated in the sixth summit, which was held under the slogan “Natural Gas: Creating the Energy Future,” while Angola, Azerbaijan, Iraq and Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Norway, Oman, Peru and the United Arab Emirates were considered observer countries.
