Algerian-American relations are “broad and deep”, said Thursday in Algiers the U.S. Undersecretary of State, Wendy Sherman, arguing that the two countries aspire to further strengthen their economic cooperation.
“The relations between the United States and Algeria are broad and deep and we aspire to continue strengthening our economic cooperation, as well as in the field of security and clean energy and many other areas,” she said at the end of the audience granted to her by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
She highlighted the willingness of both countries to “increase their trade and economic cooperation” and “deepen their relations.
Describing her meeting with the Head of State as “very productive”, the U.S. Undersecretary of State said that President Tebboune “shared his plans to create more jobs and diversify the Algerian economy in strategic sectors, including agribusiness, information technology and communication and clean energy.
“These are areas in which U.S. companies can work closely with Algeria,” she said, recalling the visit to Algeria last week of a delegation of small U.S. companies specializing in wind energy, wastewater treatment and oil services.
After expressing her “sincere thanks” to President Tebboune for “his hospitality and warm welcome”, Ms. Sherman said the Americans are “delighted and honored” that President Tebboune “plans to visit the U.S. pavilion at the Algiers International Fair next June, where the United States will be the guest of honor.
In addition, the U.S. official noted a “convergence of views” between the two countries on the issue of regional stability, including the threat posed by the presence of foreign forces in the Sahel region.
“The United States and Algeria agree that regional stability is the key to a peaceful and prosperous future for the entire region. Our two countries are concerned about the destabilizing presence of foreign forces and are working together to counter violent extremist groups,” she said.
She also said that her meeting with President Tebboune “also covered important regional issues,” noting that she will continue the discussion she began with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Mr. Ramtane Lamamra, earlier in the day.
The audience took place in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community abroad, Mr. Ramtane Lamamra, the Director of Cabinet at the Presidency of the Republic, Mr. Abdelaziz Khellaf and the Director General of the North American Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Berrah.
