On the occasion of Ramadan, the Social Media team of the English club Manchester City Football Club (Man City) invited Bernardo and Zack to a culinary tour to discover traditional dishes from different countries.
Bernardo and Zack Steffen tried traditional dishes from 5 different countries. Will they be able to match the dish to its country of origin? Check it out via the video above…
The Chorba Frik, the queen of Ramadan in Algeria
The two players started their tasting with the famous Algerian soup: Chorba frik, the queen of all Ramadan iftar tables in Algeria.
The American goalkeeper of Manchester City Zack Steffen could not guess the origin of the soup initially, but he liked its spicy side that matches his taste for Indian cuisine.
Regarding Bernando Silva, the Portuguese professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder at Man city was able to guess the origin of the soup because he was used to Moroccan and Lebanese cuisines which thinks it has similarities with Algerian soup.
The two stars also tasted different traditional dishes from the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, India and Indonesia.
Chorba Frik is one of the 12 best international dishes
Soup is one of the oldest and most universal foods in the world, said Janet Clarkson, author of the book “Soup: a world history”.
Chorba frik (شربة فريك), from its original name dchicha (دشيشة) or tchicha, is a soup made from crushed green wheat and meat1, consumed in Algeria, especially during the month of Ramadan.
According to the CNN Travel website, the Algerian dish “Chorba Frik” was chosen among the 12 best soup dishes in the world, which is the oldest food.
