ORAN- The kick-off of the 19th Mediterranean Games of Oran (June 25-July 6), was given officially, by President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Saturday evening at the stadium of the new Olympic Complex of Oran, named after late international player Miloud Hadefi, Inaugurated, last Thursday, by Abdelmadjid Tebboune, this Olympic high and international standard complex, equipped with modern sports facilities, demonstrates Algeria’s willingness to receive its guests in the best conditions, as called for by the president of the Republic in multiples occasions.
The 19th Mediterranean Games kicked off, on Saturday night, in the province of Oran, some 540km western of Algerian capital Algiers, witnessed a large crowd in a festive atmosphere, marked by the presence of Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, his accompanying delegations, made up of Heads of State and Government, Vice President of the Republic of Turkey, Fuat Oktay, Governors of the Republic of San Marino Oscar Mina and Paolo Rondelli, and ministers from several countries.
A three-hour-long opening ceremony was held at the Oran Olympic Stadium, that accommodates up to 40,000 spectators. Approximately 3,390 athletes representing 26 Mediterranean nations, including 18 European countries, 5 African countries, and 3 Asian countries, walked into the stadium with their national colors amid the enthusiasm of the players to start their participation in the tournament. They will compete in 24 disciplines.
The city of Oran dazzled all the attendees of the opening ceremony of the Mediterranean Games 2022 through many events that won the admiration of the attendees.
The opening ceremony included a documentary film about Algeria, depicting some segments its honorable history, the picturesque atmosphere that its various cities enjoy, and the historical monuments scattered there.
Then the activities of the opening ceremony of the Mediterranean Games continued with folklore and heritage performances, musical and lyrical pieces, as well as fireworks displays.
It is noteworthy that the Mediterranean Games “Oran 2022” were scheduled to be held in the summer of 2021, but were postponed due to the repercussions of the emerging Corona virus (Covid-19), and the holding of the Olympic Games “Tokyo 2020” in the same year.
This is the second time Algeria hosts the Mediterranean Games after 1975.
The first edition of the Mediterranean Games was organized in 1951 in Egypt’s Alexandria, and since 1993 the Games have been held in the year that follows the summer Olympic Games.
