Algeria is a country rich in cultural and historical heritage, with varied landscapes ranging from snow-capped mountains to arid deserts. Despite this, tourism in Algeria has long been limited due to political and security instability.

However, with the current situation improving, Algeria seeks to develop authentic and selective tourism to attract travelers to discover its hidden wonders.

The Algerian government recently launched a strategy to promote cultural and historical tourism, highlighting archaeological sites, historical monuments and museums. Visitors can discover the Roman remains of Timgad, the medieval fortresses of Tlemcen or the ruins of the ancient city of Hippo. National museums, like the National Museum of Algiers, also offer a fascinating view of Algerian culture and history.

In addition to these cultural sites, Algeria also offers a wide range of natural landscapes, ranging from the snow-capped mountains of the Aurès to the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean coast. Adventure seekers can venture into the desert dunes of Algeria for a wild camping experience or explore the caves and canyons of the Tassili n’Ajjer region.

To attract the most demanding travellers, Algeria is also striving to develop selective tourism by offering top-of-the-range accommodation and exclusive activities.

Visitors can relax in the luxury hotels of the Mediterranean coast or explore the peaceful oases of the Tassili n’Ajjer region by 4×4. There are also options for foodies, with starred restaurants offering authentic local cuisine.

Algeria does not want mass tourism

The Algerian government recently announced that it does not want mass tourism to arrive on its soil. There are several reasons for this decision.

First of all, the country is currently recovering from a period of economic and social crisis, and mass tourism could cause even more stress on the already fragile infrastructure. In addition, the Algerian government wants to preserve the country’s historic sites and natural landscapes, and fears that the influx of tourists could cause irreparable damage.

However, this does not mean that Algeria is closed to tourism. On the contrary, the Algerian government encourages travelers to discover the country responsibly and respectfully of its heritage. Visitors are invited to visit the archaeological sites with an experienced guide, and to respect the rules of environmental protection in force.

Ecotourism is particularly encouraged, with opportunities for travelers to experience Algeria’s unique flora and fauna, and the local communities that depend on it. Visitors can also explore the country’s historic cities, such as Tlemcen and Constantine, and learn about Algerian art and culture.

François Mazure recounts his stay in Algeria

Belgian RTBF journalist François Mazure recently spent a week in Algeria for his program “Un monde à part”. He shared his experience and observations.

The Belgian journalist recently visited Algiers to discover the local dishes. Among the dishes he tasted, he was particularly seduced by loubia, a traditional Algerian dish made from red beans. While visiting Algiers, the country’s capital, François was amazed by the historic architecture of the city and the Casbah.

During his stay, François was fascinated by the beauty of Ghardaïa. He described the local market as a real gem, where he was able to discover local products such as spices, carpets, pottery and jewelry. He was also impressed by the quality of the products offered, which reflect the artisanal expertise of the region.

In addition to his market visits, François also had the chance to take part in a Fantasia show, a popular tradition in Algeria. He described the experience as “breathtaking”, with riders dressed in traditional outfits, riding camels and engaging in epic competitions.

To top it off, François also had the opportunity to ride a camel during his visit. He described this experience as “a magical moment”, where he was able to admire the magnificent landscapes of Ghardaïa from a unique point of view.

To share his travel memories, François posted a postcard on social media, hoping to inspire others to come and discover Algeria. He said: “I highly recommend everyone to visit Ghardaia and experience the unique culture, traditions and landscapes of this amazing country.”

In short, Algeria seeks to develop authentic and selective tourism by highlighting its cultural and natural riches, as well as accommodation options and exclusive activities for the most demanding travellers. With this strategy, Algeria hopes to attract an increasing number of visitors to discover its hidden wonders.
