The “TasteAtlas” site recently asked one of the artificial intelligence programs to design images of several world cuisines, like the Algerian cuisine, in order to discover how the AI programs imagine food and the dishes of human beings.
The TasteAtlas site, which specializes in restaurant ratings, presented three images of Algerian dishes, as Midjourney, the famous AI program in this field, imagines them.
Among the three images created by artificial intelligence on Algerian cuisine, there is an image of the dish “couscous”, considered the most popular dish in Algeria by Midjourney. The program’s choices for designing the image were strictly vegan, as the AI couscous contained no trace of meat. Green olives were added to the broth.
The second image drawn by the program in response to the editor’s request for a common scene in the country’s traditional restaurants, shows people dressed in different Arab attire, seated on the floor around small low tables.
However, the traditional restaurant imagined by the program looked more like the alleys of the old Kasbah of Algiers, or perhaps the streets of the districts of Damascus.
As for the third image meant to represent the program’s general perception of Algerian cuisine, it included a mix of native and foreign elements. Such as Indian bread placed under the soup dish, as well as undefined grains, vegetables and utensils.
Midjourney, the artificial intelligence robot
Midjourney is an artificial intelligence robot that designs and modifies images and graphics by executing commands written by its human users.
This robot was launched in the summer of 2022 on the “Discord” platform. To make the requested images, just write simple sentences that start with the word “Imagine”.
Those responsible for the program define themselves as a “small, self-funded team” focused on design and artificial intelligence. It consists of 11 full-time employees and a group of advisors.
This team is made up of entrepreneurs, designers and programmers, led by the founder of the project, David Holz. He is a young man from Florida who worked as a designer and studied math and physics.
