Muscat – The Omani documentary film ‘Al Zeeg,’ directed by Salah al Hadrami, has been shortlisted in the fourth edition of the Kardada African Film Festival, which will be held in Algeria from September 30 to October 2, 2023. The Omani film qualified alongside 35 films from 12 countries.
Produced by Oman Film Society, Al Zeeg delves into the intimate relationship between Omanis and sugarcane cultivation.
The film details the challenges involved in producing sugarcane syrup.
Additionally, it underscores the nutritional and economic importance of sugarcane, while exploring the social implications of embracing change and modernisation.
The film has received several awards from local, Arab, and international festivals, including the first-place award at Digital Gate International Film Festival in Algeria, the Best Cinematography Award at the Muscat Film Festival, the third-place award at the Arab Heritage Film Festival in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, the second-place award at the Kuwait New Film Festival in Kuwait, and the Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Cinematography awards at the Diamond Cut International Film Festival in India.

206 works proposed at the “Kerdada short film and documentary” festival
The films received were directly handed over to the viewing committee, responsible for selecting the productions to participate in the competition which will be launched from September 30.
Dramatic fiction ranks first in terms of the number of works proposed with 123 films, followed by documentaries, with 50 films, according to Mr. Berrabah who specified that the selected works will be submitted to the arbitration of a jury composed of specialists and filmmakers, chaired by Djamel-Eddine Hazourli, Omar Lekkam and Fatima Ouazene.
For her part, Leila Bouazza, director of the Nasreddine-Dinet National Public Museum in Bou-Saâda, which will host the festival, indicated that everything is “ready” to host this cultural event which “will help to breathe new life into the activity cultural, in general, and cinema, in particular, in the region of Bou-Saâda, known for its rich history and its contributions to art.
The same official underlined “the importance of this festival in highlighting young talents, in promoting the spirit of competition between Arab and African artists and in the development of the film industry.
