The African Union (AU) Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS), Ambassador to the AU, Bankole Adeoye said Friday in Oran that Algeria continued to play its pan-African role for a better Africa.
“Algeria continues to play its African role for a better, peaceful and secure Africa, and a human rights Africa that guarantees sustainable development and the aspirations we really need,” stated Bankole Adeowe to the media on the sidelines of the 8th high-level seminar on peace and security in Africa.
The same diplomat highlighted that “The African voice is preponderant at the international level and we need a leading AU member state like Algeria to play this very specific role”
He added: “We would like to see Algeria continue to be represented in these mechanisms, whether at the level of the African Union or at the international level.”
Regarding the themes addressed by Oran’s seminar, the ambassador to the African Union indicated that the participants touched on governance in Africa, how to combat terrorism and extremism, and coordination between member states of the African organization, declaring, “It is necessary to combat terrorism, extremism and radicalism, and to confront the challenges of combating underdevelopment and poverty.”
“As members of the African Union, we want the Oran process to take the lead, given its value,” he added, recalling that the path of peace and security in Africa was started in Oran in 2013-2014 by the Algerian government to promote coordination, listening, communication and consultation between the various member states of the African Union within the Peace and Security Council and the three African non-permanent members (A3) of the UN Security Council.
On the other hand, in response to a question related to the Western Sahara issue, the same ambassador affirmed that this issue is on the table of the African Union, highlighting that it is “important to encourage our member states to pursue their commitments for peace, security and stability.”
