(ANSAmed) – ALGIERS, APRIL 11 – Algerian authorities decided today to increase pensions with percentages between 2 and 10%, according to a statement issued by the Algerian presidency. The same source said that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered the government to retroactively increase pensions for the years 2021 and 2022.
The statement explained that there will be an increase of 10% for pensions below or equaling 15,000 dinars (some 100 euros), while the increase will be lower (2%) for pensions exceeding 43,000 dinars (274 euros).
According to the State’s pension fund, Algeria has more than 3 million pensioners in a country with over 44 million inhabitants.
Pensioners and unions have for a long time urged authorities to increase pensions given a deterioration of the purchasing power and a wave of elevated prices that has been lasting for two years.
At the end of March, Algerian authorities started to provide unemployment benefits for the first time in the history of the North African country, or 13,000 dinars (82 euros).(ANSAmed).
