The Algerian judo selection (seniors) was crowned African champion by mixed teams, Sunday in Oran, at the end of the 43rd edition of the continental event.
After an easy qualification against Cameroon in the elimination phase, the Algerian judokas and judokates faced strong opposition in the final fights from the Senegalese selection who beat their Moroccan counterpart in the previous round.
It was also necessary to wait for the sixth fight for the Algerian victory to take shape thanks to Halata Yamina (-57 kg), which sealed the fate of the final of the African championship allowing Algeria to win ( 4-2).
Halata was the fourth element of the national team to have won his fight after Redouane Messaoud (-73 kg), Bellakhal Souad (-70 kg) and Asselah Souad (-70 kg), while to everyone’s surprise, Benamadi Abderrahmane (-90 kg) and Berrakaa Mohamed (+ 90 kg) both left feathers against the Senegalese Diao and Ndyae.
For their part, the selections of Morocco and Cameroon shared the third place synonymous with bronze medals after beating respectively Angola and Mauritius (4-0 and 4-1).
At the end of the tests, the national trainer, Ahmed Moussa, said he was “very happy” with this victory against Senegal in a final which “was hardly easy” for his foals.
“As expected, the mission was not at all easy against the Senegalese opponent, winner of the previous team edition. Despite this, we managed to meet the challenge”, he said. said.
The technical boss of the Greens paid tribute to his capés “who made a lot of effort during the preparation and were well rewarded as a result”, he said.
Having regained the national technical bar for almost a year, Ahmed Moussa was also optimistic for the next challenges, in particular the 19th edition of the Mediterranean Games scheduled for June 25 to July 6 in Oran.
Before this team event, Algerian judokas won seven individual titles for a total of fifteen medals (seven gold, three silver and five bronze).
