ALGIERS – Two Algerian photographs, captured by photographer Yahia Talbi from the Beni Abbès region, have secured one of the top ten places globally in the “World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Photo Contest 2024,” according to a statement released on Friday by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications.
The contest required participants to submit photographs from around the world that illustrate the positive role of information and communication technologies in achieving sustainable development goals, the statement added.
The two Algerian photos hold “great symbolic significance,” the statement continues. The first photo, taken in the town of Timoudi in southern Algeria, depicts how different generations have adapted to new means of communication. It captures an elderly woman speaking on the phone with her granddaughter, whom she hasn’t seen in months, displaying a mix of joy, tears, and nostalgia.
The second photo, taken in Tinerkouk, also in southern Algeria, portrays “the close relationship between young Hamhama and his camel, through a video conversation with his friends,” highlighting how information and communication technologies have bridged the distance between them.
The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Photo Contest is an annual event that showcases the impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) on communities and individuals worldwide. The contest aims to highlight how ICT can be harnessed to meet the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Role of ICT in Sustainable Development
ICT plays a pivotal role in sustainable development by enabling:
- Education: Providing access to educational resources and facilitating remote learning.
- Healthcare: Improving healthcare delivery through telemedicine and electronic health records.
- Economic Growth: Creating new job opportunities and fostering innovation.
- Social Inclusion: Connecting remote communities and enhancing social interactions.
Significance of the Winning Photos
The winning photos by Yahia Talbi are emblematic of these roles. The first photo from Timoudi emphasizes the social inclusion aspect, showcasing how technology can maintain familial bonds and emotional connections despite physical distance. This aligns with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequality).
The second photo from Tinerkouk highlights the unique cultural integration of modern technology with traditional lifestyles. The young man using video calls to stay connected with friends while tending to his camel illustrates the blend of modern and traditional, promoting SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).
These images not only celebrate technological advancements but also emphasize the importance of preserving cultural heritage while embracing modernity. They remind us that technology, when used thoughtfully, can enhance our lives and strengthen our communities.
