The head of the Independent National Electoral Authority, Mohamed Charfi, called today, Sunday, in Algiers, for the necessity of confronting all those who try to spoil the democratic gains that were achieved and became a reality in the new Algeria.

In a statement to the press following the announcement of the provisional results of the mid-term elections for members of the National Assembly, Charfi explained that “Algeria is our responsability” that must be preserved and not left to spoilers, adding that the democratic path “has become a reality in the new Algeria” thanks to the results of the successive elections, starting with the presidential elections of December 12, 2019 which was the first step in a series of renewal of the democratic institutions of the Algerian state.

On the occasion, the head of the authority valued all those who contributed to the success of this election, which was organized yesterday, Saturday, headed by the General Staff of the People’s National Army and all the security services, in addition to judges, police secretaries, and supervisors of voting offices and the medical corps for their continuous cooperation with the authority to ensure the process and integrity of the process.

According to the preliminary results announced by Charfi, the National Liberation Front won 26 seats, followed by the Liberals with 13 seats, the Third National Democratic Rally won 11 seats, while the rest of the political parties participating in these elections shared the remaining number of seats.

As for the National Building Movement, it won five seats, which is the same number obtained by the Future Front, followed by the Socialist Forces Front, the People’s Voice and the New Dawn (two seats), then the Algeria’s AMAL Association and the Society for Peace Movement with one seat.

Among the 68 winners in the mid-term elections for the National Assembly are only two women, while the average age of new members is 45 years.

The number of voters reached 62,124, representing a participation rate of 96.22%, knowing that 200 candidates from party lists and 273 independent candidates applied for it.

As for the ten new provinces that participated for the first time in the mid-term elections for the upper house of Parliament, points were counted, not votes, meaning that one voter could vote for more than one candidate, similar to what was followed in the system the list.

By introducing two seats for each new province compared to one seat for the previous 48 provinces, the number of seats in the upper house of Parliament increased by 20 from 144 seats.
