“Chabchaq maricane will be screened in London as part of the Dz Fest, thus appearing in the rich program of this festival bringing together music, photography, cinema, dance, fashion and Algerian literature” indicated on its facebook page the Algerian director Amel Blidi who congratulates the organizer for “the immense work carried out by RM Lamri in order to spread the Dz culture beyond our borders”.

Note, moreover, that Amel Blidi’s film is the recipient of the Best Short Film Award at the 4th screen Online film. A well-deserved reward for his very beautiful film. This festival is noted as “the result and culmination of the continuous work of Algerian artists and professionals to bring Londoners a taste of the very rich and dynamic Algerian culture, unfortunately little known”.

The objective of this festival is said to be “To explore with the Algerian diaspora, the themes of identity and cultural regeneration through a very rich program of Arts, Exhibitions, theater, conferences, literature , gastronomy, dance, performances, rhythms, history, films and of course music!”.

A group exhibition for women

On September 30, the festival will begin with “Elle-Djazaïr”, an all-female exhibition curated by Toufik Douib. Elle-Djazaïr intends to explore the contemporary chronicles of Algerian identity representation, as reflected through different visual mediums, photography, digital art and performance. This collective exhibition draws a parallel between the generations of the Anglo-Algerian diaspora and the complex links with the mother country.

The exhibition brings together the work of renowned artists such as Houria Niati, Anissa Berkane, Hamida Zed and Jamila Boughelaf who will unveil her first exhibition of drawings and paintings. The exhibition will continue until October 8.
On October 1, which will mark the opening of Dzfest, there will be the first edition of DzTalk, which will be hosted by a surprise guest speaker. Also on the menu, the Bazaar which will help people rediscover Algeria thanks to its various local artists and artisans, competitions and more! Also on the program is an Algerian dance workshop with Esraa Warda, an emerging dance artist from New York and an educator specializing in traditional North African dance forms. Dzfest will give registrants the opportunity to learn four types of dance styles, namely assimi, chaoui, kabyle and raï. Algerian cinema is not to be outdone since it will be present through classics, contemporary feature films and short films, including conference-debates with Algerian filmmakers. Round tables around the theme of Identity are also planned.

Samira Brahmia and co!

Children will be treated to singing and percussion workshops followed by performances, a painting station and a marvelous performance of an old Algerian folk tale presented by the Khayaal Theater company. The chaâbi will be there with Sid Ahmed El Bahi.

A UK-based chaabi musician who will delight audiences with his beautiful voice and repertoire, to the sound of his mandola.

Other Algerian artists who are sure to cause a stir include Jaz Kahina, or local talent from London. A rising star of underground British hip-hop. A lyricist and a rapper.

The combination of its quirky visual style, content, and fast-paced spiritual flows turned heads and garnered critical acclaim.

Finally, the highlight of the festival will unquestionably be her: Samira Brahmia and the members of her world-renowned band.

With a rich career with multiple influences, Samira has since been able to seduce a huge audience, on both sides of the Mediterranean, by becoming a real beast of the stage, not only from the Maghreb…She will certainly make the public travel thanks to her brand new album and its haunting music.

On October 05, place at the “Night of Literature”, highlighting Algerian literature with a round table which will be animated by Algerian authors.

On October 8, the festival will close with a big fashion show dedicated to the richness of traditional Algerian costume.
All in all, a very good program!
