In the final, Abdellaoui (5th in the world) had the merit of dominating Sevinch, a formidable opponent ranked 3rd in the world.
Algerian Chérine Abdellaoui won the gold medal in the Para-Judo Grand Prix in Baku (Azerbaijan), beating Uzbek Salaeva Sevinch on Tuesday in the final of the 52 kg category of the tournament. In a fight that went to extra time, Chérine Abdellaoui (5th in the world) had the merit of dominating Sevinch, a formidable opponent ranked 3rd in the world. More combative and solid on the tatami, the Algerian forced her opponent to defend, which cost her, each time, a shido (warning) to reach the three yellow cards which offered Abdellaoui the gold medal. Exempted from the 1st round in a competition that brought together 13 competitors, Abdellaoui had to compete against three judokats: the Japanese Ishi Ayumi, the German Brussig Ramona whom she beat with an ippon in the semi-finals and therefore Salaeva Sevinch. The bronze medals in the category were shared by Fujiwara Yui (Japan) and Safarova Basti (Azerbaijan). For his part, the Algerian athlete, Ishak Ouldkadour, took 5th place in the -60 kg category which brought together 20 competitors. The course of the two other Algerian judokas, Sid Ali Lamri (-66 kg) and Mehdi Meskine (-73 kg), fell short of expectations, as he stopped in the second round of the competition. Despite his good start to the tournament and a victory against the Russian Rudenko Victor, Lamri was knocked out by the Georgian Gamjashvili Giorgi, 2nd in the world ranking, while Meskine beat the Portuguese Goncalves Ruben before falling to the world leader of the category, the German Kornhass Nikolai. 38 countries represented by 187 athletes including five Algerians take part in the Baku Para-Judo Grand Prix, penultimate qualifying competition for the Tokyo Paralympic Games (August 24 – September 5, 2021). The last qualifying competition will take place in June in England.
