United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, hailed Algeria’s pivotal and positive role in North Africa and the Sahel, underlining his full support for its efforts and initiative.
This came, according to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the meeting of the UN Secretary-General with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ramtane Lamamra, yesterday, Saturday, on the sidelines of the proceedings of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, where “the two men reviewed the latest developments in the region, especially the efforts made by Algeria to promote peaceful solutions to the crises in Libya, Mali, and the Sahel / Sahara region.
The meeting also dealt, the statement adds, with “the challenges facing the decolonization process in Western Sahara and ways to activate the efforts of the United Nations to resume negotiations between the two parties to the conflict namely, Kingdom of Morocco and Polisario Front, with the aim of reaching a solution that guarantees the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence in accordance with relevant UN resolutions.”.
In this context, the Secretary-General “expressed his appreciation for the continuous efforts made by Algeria to achieve security and stability in North Africa and the Sahel region, stressing his full support for its efforts and initiative,” according to the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
