The navies of India and Algeria have conducted the first naval exercise off the Algerian coast, in reflection of the growing maritime cooperation between the two sides.
The Indian Navy’s stealth frigate INS Tabar and Algerian naval ship ANS Ejazer were part of the maritime partnership exercise on Sunday, officials said.
Describing the exercise as a “historic” event, Indian Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal said it opens up possibilities of enhancing dialogue and cooperation between the two navies in the future.
“As part of the exercise, various activities were carried out between Indian and Algerian warships including coordinated maneuvering, communication procedures and steam past,” he said.
“The exercise enabled both the navies to understand each other’s operational concepts, enhance interoperability and open up the possibility of enhancing dialogue and cooperation in the future,” the naval official said.
India has been focusing on enhancing defense and security ties with various African countries over the years.
