ALGIERS- Algeria repatriated, on 3 July 2020, the remains of 24 skulls of the fighters of the Algerian resistance against the French occupation who returned to their native land after a century and a half of their decapitation in France.

Algeria had made an official request, to France, for the return of the skulls, and the issue was discussed between the highest authorities of the two countries.

Kept for over a century and a half at the Museum of Natural History in Paris, the skulls of the repatriated resistance fighters and which were received in a solemn military ceremony, chaired by President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, minister of National Defense, belong to the heroes of the Algerian resistance against the French colonialism, like Mohammed Lamjad Ben Abdelmalek known as Cherif Boubaghla (1854), Sheikh Bouziane of Zaatchas (1849), Moussa El-Derkaoui, his military adviser, and Si Mokhtar Ben Kouider Al-Titraoui.

They also include the mummified head of Aissa El-Hamadi, who was the lieutenant of Cherif Boubaghla, and the integral moulding of the head of Mohamed Ben-Allel Ben Embarek, lieutenant of Emir Abdelkader.

President Tebboune announced in an official ceremony organized on the occasion of the 58th anniversary of the double anniversary of Independence and Youth, that it is a first step in the repatriation of the mortal remains of the Algerian resistance fighters, underlining the State’s determination to continue this operation until the repatriation of all the remains of all the Algerian resistance fighters to be buried in the country for which they had sacrifices their lives.

The military aircraft C-130 carrying, from France, the remains of the 24 Algerian resistance fighters against the French colonization, escorted by fighter planes, landed in the early afternoon at the Houari Boumediene airport.

The skulls of the valiant resistance fighters were carried by a military aircraft, escorted by fighter planes. Air demonstrations of parachutists of the People’s National Army bearing the national flag followed their landing and a twenty-one gun salute was fired in their honor.
