The GCC’s six countries account for 40 per cent (842,643) of all cases in the Mena region, while Iran makes up 22.4 per cent of the total 2.1 million infections.
On 4 October, Iran’s Civil Aviation Organisation said all flights to and from Iraq had been cancelled until further notice to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Flights were being operated between both countries to transfer Iranians back home from Iraq.
To date, Iran has confirmed 471,772 cases of Covid-19, with 389,966 recoveries and 26,957 deaths.
Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Tunisia, Libya, Algeria, Yemen, Syria, Morocco and Lebanon together comprise 37.7 per cent (793,800) of all regional infections.
Algeria alone has confirmed 52,136 cases so far, with 36,578 recoveries and 1,760 deaths.
The North African country is further easing restrictions as it records a reduction in daily case numbers.
On 4 October, it was announced that schools and universities will reopen on 21 October and 22 November, respectively.
Separately, the preliminary draft of the 2021 Finance Law was presented to the Council of Ministers in a meeting chaired by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Algerian authorities aim to rationalise economic balances and will avoid introducing taxes that do not impact the size of the budget. They plan to introduce tax exemptions of up to five years for startups, tighten wealth tax controls and explore foreign partnerships, particularly in the Mediterranean, through the shipbuilding sector.
