Karim Moussaoui, Algerian director, is known for his work in the film industry, but he is also known for his curiosity. This curiosity pushed him to look for what comes closest to an Opera in his country, Algeria. Accompanied by a film crew, he ventured into the desert in search of women who sing the “Taguerabt” (Gourara song) in caves. This mysterious quest has been documented in a short film called “Stars in the Eyes”.

Gourara is a region located in the southwest of Algeria, known for its cultural heritage and ancestral traditions. The “Taguerabt” is a traditional song of the women of the Gourara region. Women usually sing “Taguerabt” at weddings, parties or other celebrations. The song is often accompanied by a group dance, where the women hold hands and form a circle.

Karim Moussaoui heard about these women and their songs, and decided to meet them. Accompanied by his film crew, they crossed the desert in search of these caves. As they traveled, doubts began to creep in: does this place really exist? Karim Moussaoui and his team’s quest eventually led them to an isolated cave, where the women of Gourara were singing and dancing.

Karim Moussaoui’s short film offers a fascinating insight into the culture and music of Gourara. The singing of “Taguerabt” is captivating, with melodious and harmonious voices. The images of the group dance are equally captivating, with the women of Gourara moving gracefully and forming a circle. The short film also offers a glimpse into the raw beauty of the Algerian desert, with its vast expanses of sand and rock.

Ultimately, Karim Moussaoui’s trip to the Gourara Desert provided him with the opportunity to experience a rich and diverse culture, as well as new perspectives on music and dance. His short film shows that even the most uncertain quests can lead to fascinating discoveries. It is also a reminder that Algeria is a country rich in traditions and cultures that deserve to be explored and celebrated.
