Trans Saharan gas pipeline – Nigeria, Niger & Algeria signs deal to revive $13bn gas pipeline investment project – Energy ministers of Nigeria, Algeria, and Niger have signed an agreement to restart the massive gas pipeline investment project, that will enable Europe to tap directly into the three country’s significant natural gas reserves. The ‘Declaration of Niamey’ agreement was signed during the third edition of the Economic Communities of West African States (ECOWAS) Mining and Petroleum Forum (ECOMOF) in Niamey on 16 February this year. The trans Saharan gas pipeline will start in the Warri region in Nigeria and run north through Niger to Hassi R’Mel in Algeria. In Hassi R’Mel the pipeline will connect to the existing Trans-Mediterranean, Maghreb Europe, Medgaz, and Galsi pipelines. The original investment for the pipeline is expected to be around $10 billion and for gas gathering, centers around $3 billion.
