Google Doodle<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0celebrating Taos Amrouche, a Kabyle-Algerian-French singer and author,<\/a>\u00a0who was among the first\u00a0Algerian<\/a>\u00a0women to publish a novel.<\/p>\n

Born in 1913 in\u00a0Tunis<\/a>, Tunisia, after her parents moved there from Algeria, today would have been Amrouche\u2019s 111th birthday.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The author attended school in Tunis before moving to France in 1935 to attend university,\u00a0Google Doodle said.<\/a><\/p>\n

She\u00a0collected and interpreted Kabyle songs with her mother<\/a>\u00a0and brother, a skill she would continue to use when she earned a scholarship to analyse Spanish and Berber music at the Casa Velasquez, an art institution in Spain.<\/p>\n

The Kayble people are Algeria\u2019s largest homogenous cultural-linguistic-ethnic community, part of the Berbers in North\u00a0Africa<\/a>, according to\u00a0Algeria.com.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

Becoming more engrossed in the oral traditions of the Kabyle people, she visited Algeria and began learning more about her ethnic heritage.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Her first novel,\u00a0Jacinthe noir\u00a0<\/em>(Black Hyacinth<\/em>), was released in 1947 and is considered one of the earliest books published by an Algerian woman. The book describes a Tunisian girl who belongs to two cultures.<\/p>\n

Another Amrouche novel,\u00a0Rue des tambourines\u00a0<\/em>(Street of the Tabors<\/em>), is autobiographical and reflects her childhood, Google Doodle said.<\/p>\n

She also released\u00a0La Grain magique\u00a0<\/em>(The Magic Grain<\/em>), which is a collection of Kabyle poems, proverbs, and legends translated by Amrouche into French.<\/p>\n

Amrouche, however, did not stop at writing when making Berber culture more accessible, as she also performed traditional Berber songs in French.<\/p>\n

Chants berb\u00e8res de Kabylie<\/em>, her first album, was very successful, leading her to create four more albums throughout the 1970s.<\/p>\n

The stories and songs helped Amrouche document and preserve parts of her oral heritage, as well as connect with both her French and Kabyle identities, Google Doodle said.<\/p>\n

She also helped co-found the Acad\u00e9mie Berb\u00e8re,\u00a0<\/em>a Paris-based Kayble association which discussed Berber culture, and she occasionally hosted meetings at her Paris home.<\/p>\n
