{"id":13435,"date":"2021-04-06T02:38:16","date_gmt":"2021-04-06T07:38:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/?p=13435"},"modified":"2021-04-06T02:38:16","modified_gmt":"2021-04-06T07:38:16","slug":"in-pictures-impressions-of-a-lost-world-in-pre-independence-algeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/en\/in-pictures-impressions-of-a-lost-world-in-pre-independence-algeria\/","title":{"rendered":"In pictures: Impressions of a lost world in pre-independence Algeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"gallery-head\">\n<h5 class=\"page-title\">Source : middleeasteye.net<\/h5>\n<div class=\"field field-field-subhead\">A new book of photographs taken by Algerian writer Mohammed Dib in 1946 offers an intimate look into the artist&#8217;s hometown and childhood<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"region region-content\">\n<div class=\"scrollmagic-pin-spacer\" data-scrollmagic-pin-spacer=\"\">\n<section id=\"block-meesocialshare\" class=\"block block-mee-social-share block-mee-social-share-block clearfix\">\n<div class=\"mee-social-share-block\">\n<div id=\"st-1\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons st-center  st-inline-share-buttons st-animated\">\n<div class=\"st-btn st-last\" data-network=\"sharethis\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/platform-cdn.sharethis.com\/img\/sharethis.svg\" alt=\"sharethis sharing button\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<article class=\"gallery full article-type clearfix\" role=\"article\" data-history-node-id=\"200381\">\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-photos\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--gallery-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-photo\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-02\/Mohammed_Dib_Algeria_Tlemcen_1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"975\" height=\"939\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-description\">\n<p>Algerian novelist, poet, and playwright, Mohammed Dib (1920-2003), best known for his early trilogy on Algeria,\u00a0<em>La Grande Maison<\/em>\u00a0(The Big House, 1952),\u00a0<em>L\u2019Incendie<\/em>\u00a0(The Fire, 1954), and\u00a0<em>Le M\u00e9tier \u00e0 tisser<\/em>\u00a0(The Loom, 1957) was born in Algeria\u2019s north-western city of Tlemcen.<\/p>\n<p>(All photographs Mohammed Dib, courtesy of the publisher)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--gallery-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-photo\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-02\/Mohammed_Dib_Algeria_Tlemcen_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1330\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-description\">\n<p>Photographs he took of his home city in 1946 when he was 26-years-old\u00a0were collated by\u00a0two publishing houses, Editions Barzakh, in Algiers, and Images Plurielles, in Marseille.\u00a0Last year they were republished in\u00a0a photobook,\u00a0<em>Tlemcen ou les lieux de l\u2019\u00e9criture<\/em>\u00a0(Places for Writing in Tlemcen), offering\u00a0another facet to the Algerian writer\u2019s talents.<\/p>\n<p>Through some 50 photographs, the reader is told the story of Dib\u2019s city, his family, and the places of his childhood, all of which would inspire his momentous literary oeuvre.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--gallery-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-photo\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-02\/Mohammed_Dib_Algeria_Tlemcen_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1359\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-description\">\n<p>In his novels, Dib writes about his people\u2019s struggle for independence from French colonial rule that began in 1954. \u201cMohammed Dib is likely one of the first Algerians to have captured the life of the Algerian people at the time,\u201d writes\u00a0Sofiane Hadjadj and Selma Hellal,\u00a0the editors of Editions Barzakh,\u00a0in the introduction to the photobook.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--gallery-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-photo\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-02\/Mohammed_Dib_Algeria_Tlemcen_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1689\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-description\">\n<p>\u201cInside this book, it is Dib-the-child who has captured those momentary impressions, those fleeting moments. He wants to be a part of a world of adults, and he is so intent on getting there he has left his own childhood behind,&#8221; writes Algerian author and friend of Dib, Wassiny Laredj, in the book&#8217;s\u00a0preface.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This inner courtyard (above) reflects the hidden secret of Dib-the-child: to have a place of his own for writing, not to become a writer, but simply to feel that he is alive, that he is free.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--gallery-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-photo\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-02\/Mohammed_Dib_Algeria_Tlemcen_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1393\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-description\">\n<p>Referring to the\u00a0<em>wast-dar<\/em>\u00a0or patio (above, at his family home), Dib writes in the photobook: \u201cI used to settle down in a corner to indulge in the pleasure of writing and, if my memory serves me right, the season lent itself to the exercise all year round, which of course is impossible: in the winter, a mix of rain, cold and snow make Tlemcen a little Siberia. Even so, that\u2019s how I remember it. Well, maybe I only wrote when the weather was good. I wouldn\u2019t be surprised.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--gallery-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-photo\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-02\/Mohammed_Dib_Algeria_Tlemcen_6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1401\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-description\">\n<p>\u201cDib makes the M\u00e9dresse [a neighbourhood in Tlemcen], with its doors and fortifications which have since disappeared, into a rich source for writing,&#8221;\u00a0writes Laredj.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He brings it back to life, rebuilds it using materials that defy the short-lived: words. The M\u00e9dresse of old only survives in Dib\u2019s vibrant creations. Scenes from\u00a0<em>The Loom<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Who Remembers the Sea<\/em>\u00a0are set in that neighbourhood.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--gallery-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-photo\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-02\/Mohammed_Dib_Algeria_Tlemcen_7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1396\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-description\">\n<p>Other places of remembrance emerge in Dib\u2019s black and white photographs. One of these is the mausoleum of Abu Madyan (above), patron saint of Tlemcen, built by the Almohad ruler, Muhammad al-Nasir ibn al-Mansur, in the early 13th century.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--gallery-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-photo\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-02\/Mohammed_Dib_Algeria_Tlemcen_8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1399\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-description\">\n<p>The writer recounts his visits to the mausoleum (above) with his family: \u201cWe shall therefore leave those populated fields, in the emptiness of the hour, and of solar manifestations, and head towards that pole, indicated by the mosque minaret like a raised index finger.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Then begins the ascent, the road climbing between the houses of El Eubad, which are hauling themselves upward, too, each higher than the next, and the higher the road climbs, the deeper we descend into ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--gallery-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-photo\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-02\/Mohammed_Dib_Algeria_Tlemcen_9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1351\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-description\">\n<p>\u201cLegend has it that when he was teaching, birds flying over the assembly would stop in their flight to take in all of his words. Ibn Arabi\u00a0is said to have always referred to him as \u2018Master of Masters,\u2019\u201d Dib writes, referring to the\u00a0revered 12th century poet, scholar, philosopher and patron saint of Tlemcen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--gallery-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-photo\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-02\/Mohammed_Dib_Algeria_Tlemcen_10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1375\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-description\">\n<p>Places, but also relatives, friends, and this series of children feature prominently throughout the book. Faces that will be brought to life in his literary works.<\/p>\n<p>Laredj recalls something Dib once said: \u201cA childhood is nothing less than that divine spark that is lost forever, that only writing, the novel and poetry\u00a0can bring back to life. Out of those two forgotten ages, childhood and adulthood, writing is born, and the buried inner child can reappear.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--gallery-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-photo\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-02\/Mohammed_Dib_Algeria_Tlemcen_11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1402\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-description\">\n<p>\u201cStarting with his earliest novels, the theme of childhood was always a favourite with Mohammed Dib. A childhood that resembles writing, where distance is the reflection of the great questions of life,\u201d writes Laredj.<\/p>\n<p>A good example of this is the character Omar, the child in\u00a0<em>The Big House\u00a0<\/em>(1952), the first part of Dib\u2019s trilogy. It is the child, Omar, who bears witness to the living hell of the \u201cnatives\u201d and to the Algerian people\u2019s growing anger over French colonial rule.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--gallery-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-photo\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-02\/Mohammed_Dib_Algeria_Tlemcen_12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1404\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-description\">\n<p>Dib\u2019s achievements as a photographer \u201ctestify to his strikingly modern vision, that of a man who is already free, of a poet both \u2018within\u2019 and \u2018without,\u2019 standing among but also beyond his contemporaries. His photographs constitute a rare and precious archive,\u201d write Hadjadj and Hellal, the editors of Editions Barzakh.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--gallery-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-photo\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-02\/Mohammed_Dib_Algeria_Tlemcen_13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1407\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-field-gallery-item-description\">\n<p>In this photo, Dib chooses a young girl dressed in a traditional Chedda wedding outfit as his subject.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDib, with supreme elegance, was able to combine images, places and movements to give shape, using two non-colours \u2013 black and white \u2013 to that which is absent. A photo is a moment captured in time, beyond the time of its taking and the moments leading up to it, which remain to be defined, and those that come afterwards, which we can only imagine or perhaps wonder about,&#8221;\u00a0writes Laredj.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What was Dib doing precisely at that instant?
