I wish to start by reiterating my sincere condolences to the government of Algeria on the passing of His Excellency Mr. Abdelaziz Bouteflika.<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n
\n
\n
\n

Mr. Bouteflika, former President of Algeria, chaired over the 29th session of the General Assembly between 1974 and 1975 while serving as Foreign Minister.<\/p>\n

As a President of the General Assembly, he promoted the principles of justice, freedom and peace as priorities for the United Nations and played an active role in these areas during his presidency.<\/p>\n

He was particularly active in the area of decolonization and is remembered for giving a voice to the liberation movements in Africa, Asia and South America.<\/p>\n

President Bouteflika also strongly advocated for a more inclusive United Nations in the post-World War era.<\/p>\n

He oversaw the admission of Bangladesh, Grenada and Guinea-Bissau as new Members of the United Nations.<\/p>\n

Many will remember that in 1974, he extended an invitation to the former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to address the General Assembly.<\/p>\n

He also played a central role in the Non-Aligned Movement and will be remembered for taking a firm stand against Apartheid in South Africa whose membership was suspended under his Presidency.<\/p>\n

I also remember his support to the democratic opposition in Portugal and to the liberation movements of former Portuguese colonies during the Salazar dictatorship.<\/p>\n

It is with emotion that I remember, I was a boy listening to the only radio channel that was linked to the Portuguese democratic opposition.<\/p>\n

The radio channel was called, Radio Portugal Livre, Radio Free Portugal, and it was broadcasting from Algiers thanks to the support of the Algerian government and in particular, the support of Minister Bouteflika.<\/p>\n

Durant sa pr\u00e9sidence de l’Assembl\u00e9e g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, le pr\u00e9sident Bouteflika a facilit\u00e9 l’adoption de nombreuses r\u00e9solutions, notamment sur la D\u00e9finition de l’agression, sur la pr\u00e9paration de la Conf\u00e9rence mondiale du d\u00e9sarmement ou encore sur la cr\u00e9ation de la Commission de la fonction publique internationale.<\/p>\n

Il a \u00e9galement pr\u00e9sid\u00e9 cinq s\u00e9ances pl\u00e9ni\u00e8res sur la question chypriote, aboutissant \u00e0 la r\u00e9solution 3212 qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 ent\u00e9rin\u00e9e par le Conseil de s\u00e9curit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Tout au long de son mandat \u00e0 la t\u00eate de l\u2019Assembl\u00e9e g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, le Pr\u00e9sident Bouteflika a encourag\u00e9 le dialogue et fait preuve d’un\u00a0leadership<\/em>\u00a0et d’un engagement fort pour les principes de la Charte des Nations Unies.<\/p>\n

Pour tout cela, nous rendons aujourd’hui hommage au Pr\u00e9sident Bouteflika \u00e0 l’Assembl\u00e9e g\u00e9n\u00e9rale.<\/p>\n
