Algeria is interested in long-term cooperation with Russia in the pharmaceutical industry, including the production of the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine, Algerian Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Abderrahmane Lotfi Djamel Benhamed, told Sputnik<\/h5>\n

ALGIERS (UrduPoint News \/ Sputnik – 01st November, 2021)\u00a0Algeria<\/a>\u00a0is interested in long-term cooperation with\u00a0Russia<\/a>\u00a0in the pharmaceutical\u00a0industry<\/a>, including the production of the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine, Algerian Minister of Pharmaceutical\u00a0Industry<\/a>, Abderrahmane Lotfi Djamel Benhamed, told Sputnik.<\/p>\n

“As you know, a cooperation protocol has been signed with the\u00a0Russian<\/a>\u00a0Direct Investment Fund (RDIF). A digital database on the\u00a0Russian<\/a>\u00a0vaccine has been created to provide a\u00a0technology<\/a>\u00a0transfer procedure that will allow\u00a0Algeria<\/a>\u00a0to produce (Sputnik V),” the minister said.<\/p>\n

However, according to him, such a procedure usually takes a long time. In particular, as Benhamed said, the\u00a0Russian<\/a>\u00a0side has not yet sent working groups to inspect Algerian enterprises. The minister stressed that it was not a delay, but the necessary time to launch the production of\u00a0drugs<\/a>\u00a0in accordance with the standards of the pharmaceutical\u00a0industry<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“We are ready to continue working with\u00a0Russia<\/a>. Moreover, we have expanded our cooperation at the expense of other products, since we know the excellent quality of\u00a0Russian<\/a>\u00a0products. We were the first African country to register Sputnik V,” Benhamed said.<\/p>\n

According to the minister, Algerian enterprises will be able to start producing the vaccine two months after receiving the raw materials.<\/p>\n

Along with the vaccine, cooperation with\u00a0Russia<\/a>\u00a0also involves the production of anti-cancer\u00a0drugs<\/a>\u00a0intended for the local\u00a0market<\/a>\u00a0and for export to the\u00a0middle<\/a>\u00a0East and African countries, Benhamed said.<\/p>\n

“We have 130 pharmaceutical laboratories that, in accordance with the\u00a0world<\/a>\u00a0standards, produce almost\u00a0all<\/a>\u00a0drugs<\/a>\u00a0the African continent needs. We export to African and European countries,” he added.<\/p>\n

Previously,\u00a0Algeria<\/a>\u00a0did not promote\u00a0exports<\/a>\u00a0of pharmaceuticals because of the obligation to meet the needs of the local\u00a0market<\/a>, but the situation has changed, Benahmed explained. In particular, the African Medicines Agency, involving 15 of the continent’s countries, will begin its work in a few weeks. According to Benhamed,\u00a0Algeria<\/a>\u00a0is “seriously preparing” to work within the framework of this organization.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0February<\/a>, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced that the production of the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine would begin in the country in about six months. In the\u00a0same<\/a>\u00a0month,\u00a0Russia<\/a>‘s trade representative in\u00a0Algeria<\/a>, Ivan Nalich, told Sputnik that\u00a0Algeria<\/a>\u00a0was showing great interest in localizing the production of this vaccine and resolving technical issues.<\/p>\n

The vaccination campaign began in\u00a0Algeria<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0January<\/a>\u00a030. The Sputnik V vaccine is actively being used. Vaccination is free of charge for\u00a0all<\/a>\u00a0population groups.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
