Not until centuries after his death did he come to be known as Leonardo Fibonacci (Son of Bonacci).<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\"><a class=\"promo-link__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc27.com\/news\/u-s-students-falling-behind-in-math-during-pandemic-study-finds\/\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. students falling behind in math during pandemic, study finds<\/a><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>Fibonaci today is remembered for two major advances in mathematics, both found in his book\u00a0<em>Liber Abaci\u00a0<\/em>(The Book of Calculation), published in 1202. Ironically, he created neither of them. Even more ironic, the one for which he is best known may be the less important of the two.<\/p>\n<p>Well, it turns out the Fibonacci series shows up in all sorts of places, from plant seed pods to sea shells to spiral galaxies. The sequence gets applied to many aspects of science, engineering, software design, and even economics.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-37421\" src=\"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Leonardo_Fibonacci-wikimedia-225x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Leonardo_Fibonacci-wikimedia-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Leonardo_Fibonacci-wikimedia.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>So why do I say the Fibonacci sequence is his second most important contribution to mathematics? Because\u00a0<strong><em>this<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is what\u00a0<em>Liber Abaci<\/em>\u00a0is really about:<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-large-font-size\"><strong>0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 ,8, 9<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was Leonardo Bonacci who introduced the European world to the Hindu-Arabic number system-the same one we use today.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As a boy, Leonardo lived for a while with his father, a customs official, in B\u00e9ja\u00efa, Algeria. There, Arabian tutors introduced the young Leonardo to the Hindu-Arabic numeral system. The boy quickly grasped how much more efficient this method was than the clunky, unwieldy Roman numerals used in Europe. To say he was enthusiastic is an understatement; he would spend much of his life popularizing the Hindu-Arabic system, starting with\u00a0<em>Liber Abaci<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not that progress was fast; back then \u201cpublishing\u201d a book meant having a scribe meticulously and laboriously transcribing it by hand. (The printing press was a couple of centuries in the future.) Word of the new math spread slowly but spread it did. By the 1400\u2019s the Roman Numeral system was on its way out.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-37424\" src=\"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Liber_abbaci_magliab_f124r-wikimedia-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Liber_abbaci_magliab_f124r-wikimedia-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Liber_abbaci_magliab_f124r-wikimedia-670x1024.jpg 670w, https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Liber_abbaci_magliab_f124r-wikimedia.jpg 744w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\"><a class=\"promo-link__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc27.com\/community\/honoring-black-history\/a-lifetime-shattering-glass-ceilings-in-math-and-science-for-black-women\/\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener\">A lifetime shattering glass ceilings in math and science for Black women<\/a><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>Would Arabic numbers have replaced Roman numerals in Europe, even without Bonacci\u2019s book? Possibly. In fact, probably-it was already spreading through the port cities of the Mediterranean and would have eventually seeped its way up to northern Europe.
