Along the berm, a 2,700km-long sand wall fortification that divides the areas controlled by Morocco and Polisario, spats and confrontations had been increasing.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-block\" role=\"group\">\n<div class=\"group-inner\">\n<div class=\"group-inner\">\n<div class=\"embedded-entity\" data-embed-button=\"file_browser\" data-entity-embed-display=\"image:image\" data-entity-embed-display-settings=\"article_page\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"d2ce31c3-1bee-45ef-babd-1c875862e4ef\" data-langcode=\"en\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/article_page\/public\/western-sahara-nama-taleb-omar-daklha-october-2021-MEE-Daniel-Hilton.jpg?itok=g7xBrwMf\" alt=\"&quot;\" width=\"1400\" height=\"900\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption>Nama Taleb-Omar, a schoolteacher evacuated from Western Sahara, in Dakhla camp, Algeria (MEE\/Daniel Hilton)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the village of Aghweinet, Sahrawi soldiers decided they could no longer guarantee the residents\u2019 security. It was time to evacuate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe children were terrified. They were frightened about returning to their tents because they were close to the wall and wanted to go straight to the border with Mauritania where it was safe,\u201d Taleb-Omar, 41, tells Middle East Eye from Dakhla refugee camp in southwestern Algeria.<\/p>\n<h3>Life in Polisario camps<\/h3>\n<p>About 30 families lived in Aghweinet at the time. Like other Sahrawi settlements in the 20 percent of Western Sahara controlled by the Polisario, Aghweinet is a remote collection of tents, mudbrick houses and more permanent concrete structures.<\/p>\n<p>There are no roads into the town. In Polisario\u2019s \u201cliberated territories\u201d, essential goods must be carted in on trucks from Algeria or Mauritania.<\/p>\n<p>Around 175,000 Sahrawi refugees live in camps around Algeria\u2019s Tindouf. The eldest were forced from Western Sahara when Morocco and Mauritania invaded in 1975. Most are their descendants, and know no other home.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-block\" role=\"group\">\n<div class=\"group-inner\">\n<div class=\"group-inner\">\n<div class=\"embedded-entity\" data-embed-button=\"file_browser\" data-entity-embed-display=\"image:image\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"1b010f62-9096-46d5-b158-f663683ff1d3\" data-langcode=\"en\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/sites\/default\/files\/western-sahara-refugee-camp-group-dakhla-october-2021-mee-daniel-hilton.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;\" width=\"1804\" height=\"1015\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption>Three Sahrawi refugees in Bojoudor camp, Algeria (MEE\/Daniel Hilton)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But during the past decade, a few thousand have trickled over into the Polisario-held parts of Western Sahara to make new lives, burnishing the Polisario-declared republic\u2019s claim as an independent state and living a traditional Sahrawi nomadic lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a beautiful life,\u201d recalls Taleb-Omar. \u201cWe became familiar with nature, tending our herds. I would never have left if it wasn\u2019t for the war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the evacuation put an end to that, making the families of Aghweinet refugees twice over. Residents were escorted to Algeria by the military in convoy. \u201cThe soldiers\u2019 faces were blank, there was no fear,\u201d says Taleb-Omar. \u201cBut everyone else was panicked &#8211; old and young. Like their daughter, they also fled Aghweinet in October and have settled just across the Mauritanian border, able to drift over to the liberated territories and tend their herds when needed.<\/p>\n<p>But such a lifestyle isn\u2019t for everyone. Khadjetu Salku, 25, moved to the northern Western Sahara town of Tifariti around six years ago because her parents wanted to live in more traditional ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hated it! The first month was so boring, we left all my friends behind in the camps,\u201d she tells MEE, her inky, henna-tipped fingers making arcs as she speaks. \u201cBut after a time I got used to it, felt more comfortable and began to like the atmosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Salku and her family left Tifariti four weeks after the ceasefire broke down in November 2020. \u201cWe were scared, but we didn\u2019t have a car to get us out.\u201d For Salku, it\u2019s the evenings drinking tea with her friends in the Tifariti desert that she misses the most, although she\u2019s okay in Bojador camp, where she\u2019s staying with her aunt.<\/p>\n<p>Her parents are a different matter. \u201cMy parents feel awful, especially my father. He always talks about Tifiriti and going back. As a goat herd, his work has been badly affected.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Struggle of the Sahara herders<\/h3>\n<p>Like Salku\u2019s father, Maalainin Mohammed, 59, was also a shepherd in the \u201cliberated territories\u201d, where he\u2019d been living since 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Though he left the village of Bir Tighisit in February, he was never rooted to one place. \u201cI followed my herd and the rain. Wherever the rain has been, I will take my animals there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even before the ceasefire broke down, Mohammed struggled. Western Sahara is suffering from a suffocating drought, and his goats were diseased and dying. \u201cSometimes we see a cloud, but it never rains. There is grass, but it has no nutrition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then came the fighting, and the situation in Bir Tighisit grew worse. \u201cWe were not psychologically stable. Her husband, who was the director of a museum in Aghweinet, is serving with the army on the front.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not worried about him at all, Allah is with him. But it\u2019s lonely here. The children\u2019s friends are not here and I really miss my friend Alam. It was a beautiful friendship. We were like one family,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what the fighting will achieve.
