Ask This Algerian!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first time Algerian biologist Rassim Khelifa went out searching for dragonflies, he netted a species that had not been seen in a century \u2014 now he studies the diet of these flying predatory insects to see if they can be used on farms to control insect pests.<\/p>\n<p>Khelifa, a\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/rassimkhelifa.weebly.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/rassimkhelifa.weebly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"quantitative ecology postdoctoral researcher\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/rassimkhelifa.weebly.com\/\">quantitative ecology postdoctoral researcher<\/a>\u00a0at the University of British Columbia\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/biodiversity.ubc.ca\/\" href=\"https:\/\/biodiversity.ubc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Biodiversity Research Centre\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/biodiversity.ubc.ca\/\">Biodiversity Research Centre<\/a>, says humanity still relies heavily on pesticides to control insect pests, which is the largest driver of insect decline globally.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;According to a <a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/118\/2\/e2023989118\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/118\/2\/e2023989118\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"series of papers\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/118\/2\/e2023989118\">series of papers<\/a>\u00a0released in early 2021, insect diversity worldwide is declining steeply in places with high human impact, but little is has been studied in less-inhabited areas.<\/p>\n<p>Reducing the use of pesticides while maintaining yield is challenging, and it requires a good understanding of which natural agents could contribute to reducing pests,\u201d he says, \u201cDragonflies have been overlooked as a potential pest control despite their regular use of agricultural lands and ability to predate a wide range of insects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-40957\" src=\"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/960x0-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/960x0-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/960x0-1.jpg 711w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text color-body light-text\"><span class=\"wp-caption-text-caption\">Close-up of dragonfly on twig, Mila,Algeria, <\/span><span class=\"wp-credit-text color-body light-text\">GETTY<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Khelifa says the biggest challenge is his work is to catch some of the largest species who fly very fast and rarely land.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am conducting genetic analyses of their feces to determine what they eat and how their diet change across different farms with different agricultural practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">From Civil War to Science<\/h2>\n<p>Khelifa grew up in\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guelma\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guelma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Guelma\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guelma\">Guelma<\/a>, in northeastern Algeria, a town settled by the ancient Phoenicians and later, Romans. (Photo by DeAgostini\/Getty Images) <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; text-transform: initial;\">DE AGOSTINI VIA GETTY IMAGES<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He says that despite his current fascination with nature, this did not start as a child.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up during a civil war and natural areas were unsafe to visit,\u201d Khelifa says, adding that his \u201cEureka moment\u201d actually came in his early 20s when he was studying biology at the University of Guelma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first time I used a hand net to catch dragonflies, I caught a rare damselfly that has not been observed for a century, with my first ever day of sweep netting\u2026 I didn\u2019t know what I caught at the time,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Khelifa presented his find to his professor and says seeing the look of astonishment from the person who had spent 15 years looking for the same species, was \u201cbeautiful to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Beyond One Perspective<\/h2>\n<p>Khelifa says the solutions to many global environmental challenges require a tight collaboration between the Global South and Global North.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrently, the scientific opinion is still mainly driven by perspectives from the Global North because of their economic and linguistic advantages for publishing in top journals,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Khelifa says scientists in the Global South have scientific perspectives that are not known in the Global North because they often publish in low-profile journals or local journals in their own (non-English) languages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have seen recent studies showing that monolingual (English-only) analysis of the literature could include biases and lead to misleading results,\u201d he says, adding that performing multilingual literature search enriches the scientific perspective and reduces biases in the results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition, many biodiversity hot-spots of the world occur in the Global South where local people know local species the best, so I believe that scientists in the Global South have a pivotal role in solving global environmental issues,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Source : <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/andrewwight\/2021\/12\/28\/can-dragonflies-help-replace-pesticides-ask-this-algerian\/amp\/\">https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/andrewwight\/2021\/12\/28\/can-dragonflies-help-replace-pesticides-ask-this-algerian\/amp\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rassim Khelifa, Postdoctoral Fellow Biodiversity,<br \/>\nResearch Centre at the University of British Columbia.<br \/>\nRASSIM KHELIFA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":50,"featured_media":40951,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[16,8,9],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-40950","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-education","category-health","category-science"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Can Dragonflies Help Replace Pesticides?
