Dear Frenchly Readers,<\/p>\n

This morning I stood at the huge paper map of the world we have affixed to our dining room wall and I tracked a journey with my finger from Paris, south through Dijon, to Marseille and then out over the Mediterranean ocean, past Mallorca where my mother lived in her teens, and on to the coast of Algeria. I took in the enormity of that country and absorbed how little I know.<\/p>\n

But I am learning. As I read\u00a0The Art of Losing<\/em><\/a>\u00a0by Alice Zeniter, like with any great work of art, this country\u2013Algeria\u2013 that, in my American ignorance, I know so little about, is coming into focus. I am trying to comprehend the lives of indigenous Algerians<\/a>\u00a0as well as those of the\u00a0pied-noirs.\u00a0<\/em><\/a>And also\u00a0the ongoing aftermath of\u00a0Algerian War of Independence,<\/a>\u00a0which ended in 1962.<\/p>\n

Then, this morning, my Uncle Jay, sent me\u00a0this article\u00a0<\/a>about a 1962 movie called\u00a0The Olive Trees<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0which came out in Paris at the end of that war,\u00a0just after a massacre of hundreds of Algerian protesters<\/a>\u00a0in Paris. It is coming (back) to theatres today.<\/p>\n

Now, I hope all of you have picked up a copy of\u00a0The Art of\u00a0 Losing\u00a0<\/em>for our Frenchly\u00a0One Book, One Read<\/strong>Zoom book club, which I am trying to organize with speakers for late February or March\u2014stay tuned as scheduling may change. Please get your copy if you haven\u2019t already, ideally from a bookseller near you!<\/p>\n

In the meantime, I want to spotlight\u00a0this great read<\/a>\u00a0from the novelist\u00a0Peter Nichols\u00a0<\/a>that we published this morning on\u00a0Frenchly.\u00a0<\/a>It\u2019s about about his illicit excursions out of Paris during\u00a0le confinement.\u00a0<\/em>It\u00a0<\/a>is such a clever and humble piece, and so clearly expresses the desperation one person can feel when confined\u2013and also what it\u2019s like to break the rules, when you know you shouldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

In other news, in our family we have recovered from what might have been fake Covid last week and are girding ourselves for real Covid any day now. How about you? How is the virus affecting your life?\u00a0This piece\u00a0<\/a>about an unvaxxed Czech folk singer made me shudder last night. She caught Covid deliberately and died.<\/p>\n

France, in the meantime, has\u00a0set a timeline for Covid restrictions,<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0lions are getting the virus<\/a>, sometimes testing positive for seven weeks, another window into how we humans\u00a0 are affecting the animal world (the effect of Covid\u00a0on minks is here<\/a>.) In our house, despite temperatures well below zero lately, we are keeping the windows cracked in a room where our cat, Hemingway, sleeps most of the day. Because he takes a medication that strips away his immune system, we are told by our amazing vet that he might be more vulnerable to Covid. We would be lost without him! And\u00a0here\u2019s a piece about how to reuse<\/a>\u00a0your KN95s and N95s and\u00a0another about the effectiveness of vaccines<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What to cook, read & watch ce weekend:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Reading\u00a0The Art of Losing<\/em>\u00a0has reminded me that I need to re-read Albert Camus\u2019\u00a0L\u2019Etranger<\/em>.<\/a>\u00a0It\u2019s been a long time and as I immerse myself in Algeria, I am reminded of\u00a0L\u2019Etranger<\/em>, which is about a French settler, Meursault, in Algeria who shoots and kills a man (who never has a name, only \u201cThe Arab\u201d) on a beach in Algiers. The Coen Brothers\u2019 film,\u00a0The Man Who Wasn\u2019t There<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0was an allusion to this book<\/p>\n

Ok, so it\u2019s January and if you\u2019re in a slump as you recover from Covid or wait for Covid,\u00a0this video\u00a0<\/a>of the\u00a0Times\u00a0<\/em>food writer Priya Krishna visiting a sandwich king at a bodega in Brooklyn, New York, will put a smile on your face. I loved this guy and his customers immediately and his incredible dignity while making the most inventive and tasty and huge sandwiches totally charmed me. This is 13 minutes of your day that you will not regret.<\/p>\n

In other pleasant news, there\u2019s\u00a0this great piece about a superhero in Senegal<\/a>, replete with a cape, who is trying to clean up plastic!<\/p>\n

And\u2026speaking of sandwiches, my husband makes a version\u00a0of this French bread pizza\u00a0<\/a>at least once a week for our kids\u2019 lunchboxes. Right now, in January, the squishy, tangy, saucy, cheesey, crisp edges of the whole thing seem to be hitting the spot. I think the\u00a0Times\u00a0<\/em>was spying on us!<\/p>\n

Last Monday, I got the privilege of writing for Frenchly. (Other than these\u00a0Le Weekends,<\/a>\u00a0I often only immerse myself in editing!) \u00a0But I was able to steal a little time and pen\u00a0this piece<\/a> about a mysterious sermon that the Reverend MLK Jr., gave at the American Church in Paris in 1965 \u2026a sermon which seems to have been lost. If you or anyone you know has any information on it, I\u2019d love to hear!<\/p>\n

In other news, we have\u00a0a tribute\u00a0<\/a>to the late actor Gaspard Ulliel who tragically died on Wednesday after hitting his unhelmeted head in skiing accident; we have\u00a0this terrific round up of podcasts\u00a0<\/a>about Paris in both French and English\u2014the one that tracks the lives of murder victims in the 80s is amazing. We found out from French Morning this week that\u00a0James McAvoy will play Cyrano at BAM\u00a0<\/a>this Spring; and on Frenchly we\u2019ve\u00a0got a profile of a woman\u00a0<\/a>who started back-country skiing in the Alps during the pandemic; another piece about\u00a0local hang-out hot springs\u00a0<\/a>in France, on the border with Spain;\u00a0a guide for going gluten-free<\/a>\u00a0in France;\u00a0French movies at Sundance\u00a0<\/a>starting this weekend; and\u00a0a piece about Eric Zemmour,<\/a>the right-wing politician who spews off racist slurs, and\u00a0more!\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

This weekend I am going to try\u00a0this Ghanaian chicken stew<\/a>\u00a0from Food 52, and I\u2019m making an\u00a0olive oil cake<\/a>\u00e0 la\u00a0Melissa Clark\u00a0<\/a>(who is no stranger in France, FYI). I\u2019m also going to dive into\u00a0this terrific piece<\/a>\u00a0about the writer (and fellow Maine resident) Lois Lowry from\u00a0The New Yorker<\/em>\u2014I\u2019ve been saving it!<\/p>\n

I leave you with\u00a0this song\u00a0<\/a>my good friend Selina sent me yesterday\u2014it\u2019s called \u201cMary,\u201d by Patty Griffin. Selina says it\u2019s about how Mary\u2013in any way you imagine her, be she the one from the Bible, the one in\u00a0Michelangelo\u2019s Piet\u00e0,<\/a> or an animal spirit that keeps you safe\u2013 is always at our backs. For me,\u00a0 this song right now is about the incredible load we mothers carry, and how many pieces we\u2019ve had to keep together these last two years. Both Selina and I said we cried when we listened it.\u00a0 I\u2019d love to hear what you think it\u2019s about?<\/p>\n
