Algeria, Nigeria, Ethiopia and South Africa have decided to create the “Group of 4 or G4” as a new alliance for consultation and coordination on African issues in the future, in an unprecedented move by the most prominent member states of the African Union. A true African G4, which in this unprecedented move will set a new pace for the African Union’s multilateral action.<\/p>\n
According to President Muhammadu Buhari, this G4 group was created to coordinate the positions of the 4 pillars of the AU in order to address the security challenges facing the African continent. These leaders of the Group stressed the need to strengthen the role of this alliance within the AU, to bring African countries together, coordinate resolutions and responses to African issues in a proactive manner and to examine the modalities for the implementation of decisions taken by the African Union.<\/p>\n
The announcement of the creation of this alliance was made by Ethiopian President Abiy Ahmed. He explained his initiative after noting that the AU has been hampered in its actions by some members, especially in recent years and on security, economic and health issues. According to him, this so-called G4 group is meant to debate, provide solutions and coordinate positions to enable the AU to continue its work effectively and quickly.<\/p>\n
