We asked 12 basic fact questions to the general public in fourteen rich countries, using online panels. Every question had three alternatives: A, B or C. When we went to the zoo and marked bananas with A, B &amp; C, the chimpanzees picked the right answer every third time. On average a monkey picking answers randomly would score 4 out of 12 correct answers. But the average score for the humans was much lower:\u00a0only 2.2! That\u2019s why the logo for the study is a monkey.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9753\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/static.gapminder.org\/GapminderMedia\/wp-uploads\/20180331225944\/misconceptions_study_2017-1024x922.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"186\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This graph shows how many people got different number of correct answers. Only 10% scored better than random.<\/p>\n<h1><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9770\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/static.gapminder.org\/GapminderMedia\/wp-uploads\/20180401233251\/gms_2017inpage-1024x523.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/static.gapminder.org\/GapminderMedia\/wp-uploads\/20180401233251\/gms_2017inpage-1024x523.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/static.gapminder.org\/GapminderMedia\/wp-uploads\/20180401233251\/gms_2017inpage-300x153.jpg 300w\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" \/><\/h1>\n<p>A stunning 15% of humans managed to pick the wrong answer on all twelve questions. That\u2019s almost impossible for a monkey to achieve. It requires systematic misconceptions. The problem here is not the lack of correct knowledge. The problem is the presence of wrong \u201cknowledge\u201d. To score this bad requires a false perception of the world, that make you pick the wrong answer systematically.<\/p>\n<p>(There was actually one question, number 13, which we have excluded because almost everyone, 87% of respondents, picked the right answer. We have excluded that question, because there wasn\u2019t any substantial ignorance about the climate experts forecasts, compared to the devastating ignorance we found about other global development. We\u2019ll post more about that later.)<\/p>\n<h2>Take the test<\/h2>\n<p>The test in the book\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gapm.io\/ffb\">Factfulness<\/a>\u00a0uses the same twelve questions. If you haven\u2019t already done so, please take the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gapm.io\/taketest2018\">Gapminder Test<\/a>\u00a0yourself, before laughing at others!
