{"id":53653,"date":"2022-05-28T10:00:29","date_gmt":"2022-05-28T09:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/?p=53653"},"modified":"2022-05-27T14:21:34","modified_gmt":"2022-05-27T13:21:34","slug":"cannes-filmmakers-urge-france-to-face-colonial-past-in-algeria-africa-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/en\/cannes-filmmakers-urge-france-to-face-colonial-past-in-algeria-africa-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Cannes filmmakers urge France to face colonial past in Algeria, Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CANNES:\u00a0Film-makers are holding up a mirror to France over its colonial past at the Cannes festival, helped by star power and a growing French readiness to face up to injustices committed notably in Africa<\/p>\n<p>The colonization of Algeria and the horrors of the Algerian war of independence (1954-1962) deeply scarred both nations and continues to mar relations, but was hardly discussed in France in public for decades.<\/p>\n<p>Although President Emmanuel Macron has acknowledged crimes committed \u2014 including a massacre by police of Algerians in Paris in 1961 which he called \u201cinexcusable\u201d \u2014 his government has ruled out \u201cpresenting an apology\u201d for France\u2019s colonial past.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/sites\/default\/files\/userimages\/2433041\/000_dv2224467.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption>French director Philippe Faucon was born in Algeria. File\/AFP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you could say that I\u2019m obsessed by the Algerian war,\u201d French director Philippe Faucon told AFP at the Cannes festival.<\/p>\n<p>His film \u201cLes Harkis\u201d tells the story of Algerians who fought alongside French troops against the independence movement, only to be left behind for the most part when France pulled out of Algeria, and facing the vengeance of the victorious Algerians.<\/p>\n<p>The movie places the responsibility for this \u201ccriminal betrayal\u201d and the subsequent massacres of Harkis firmly at the doorstep of then-president Charles de Gaulle.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/sites\/default\/files\/userimages\/2433041\/mv5bzge3yjkxmzktndayzs00m2jhltkwntytndi0zmmzzdhmnguwxkeyxkfqcgdeqxvymti4nza1njg5._v1_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"477\" \/><figcaption>\u201cLes Harkis\u201d tells the story of Algerians who fought alongside French troops against the independence movement. Supplied<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is necessary to recall this story and look the truth in the eyes,\u201d said Algerian-born Faucon, although historical \u201ccomplexities\u201d make easy judgments impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow director Mathieu Vadepied also warned against facile conclusions about France\u2019s forced recruitment of Senegalese soldiers for its World War I war effort, the subject of his film \u201cTirailleurs\u201d (\u201cFather and Soldier\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>French superstar Omar Sy \u2014 who has won a huge international following with his roles in \u201cUntouchable\u201d and the Netflix smash hit \u201cLupin\u201d \u2014 plays the lead in the story about a father and a son who are both forced into the trenches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy idea is to put things into question,\u201d Vadepied told AFP. \u201cQuestion France\u2019s historical relationship with its former colonies, what do we have to say about that today, do we even know what we did?\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/sites\/default\/files\/userimages\/2433041\/mv5byjy0nmqyzmytnzjizi00otdilthjyjitngrmogywowiym2qzxkeyxkfqcgdeqxvyoda0mjgynzm._v1_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"570\" \/><figcaption>France\u2019s forced recruitment of Senegalese soldiers for its World War I war effort is the subject of the film \u201cTirailleurs\u201d. Supplied<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While rejecting any \u201cfrontally political\u201d approach, he said that \u201cif we deny the facts we can never move on, we need to tell these stories, everybody needs to know them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The idea was however \u201cnot to guilt-trip people, but to recognize the painful history and free ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sy, the France-born son of west African immigrants, told the audience at the film\u2019s opening night: \u201cWe have the same story, but we don\u2019t have the same memories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second Cannes week will see the screening of \u201cNos Frangins\u201d (\u201cOur Brothers\u201d) by French director Rachid Bouchareb who in 2006 sparked a nationwide debate with \u201cIndigenes\u201d (\u201cDays of Glory\u201d), a film about the contribution of North African soldiers to the French Free Forces during World War II.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/sites\/default\/files\/userimages\/2433041\/nos_frangins.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"670\" height=\"506\" \/><figcaption>\u00a0A still from \u2018Nos Frangins\u2019.
