As Algerian President Tebboune is on State visit to Rome, here\u2019s a rundown<\/div>\n<p><b>Ever closer.\u00a0<\/b>As Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio remarked on Wednesday, Italy\u2019s desire to deepen relations with Algeria has good geopolitical, cultural, and commercial reasons. Case in point:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Algiers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/decode39.com\/3180\/italy-energy-deal-algeria-gas-renewables\/\">turned into<\/a>\u00a0Rome\u2019s biggest gas supplier in April, overtaking Moscow, following a deal between Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Algeria will supply Italy with up to 33 billion cubic metres (bcm) a year, amounting to roughly 40% of the latter\u2019s needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>See you at mine.<\/b>\u00a0PM Draghi had travelled to Algiers to finalise that deal. On that occasion he invited President Tebboune to Rome: on Wednesday, he touched down in the Eternal City.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The Algerian Head of State met with his Italian counterpart, Sergio Mattarella, as well as with PM Draghi.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">He will also travel to Naples, replicating the pattern of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/decode39.com\/2261\/mattarella-algeria-eni\/\">Mr Mattarella\u2019s trip to Algeria<\/a>, which had included two stops: Algiers, the capital, and Annaba, an important industrial hub.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Beyond the headlines.\u00a0<\/b>Professor Toufik Bouqaida, who teaches political science at the University of Algiers, told\u00a0<i>Decode39<\/i>\u00a0that the visit is happening under rather exceptional circumstances. Both because of the Russian war in Ukraine, with its effects on security and energy in Europe, and the situation on the southern shore of the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\u201cAlgeria is going through political and security turmoil and multiple economic crises, and the two sides are trying to strengthen these relations through high levels of trade and investments. This visit will result in several contracts, which will act as a starting point.\u201d<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\u201cHowever,\u201d he continued, \u201cI hope that Algerian-Italian relations will not remain confined to official statements in front of the cameras and reciprocal visits, as it has been in the past.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Investments and know-how.\u00a0<\/b>Ali Qureshi, a journalist specialising in economic affairs for the Algerian news channel\u00a0<i>Echorouk<\/i>, told\u00a0<i>Decode39\u00a0<\/i>that the Italo-Algerian rapprochement is accelerating on the economic level, and it\u2019s bound to broaden: \u201cties of friendship, cooperation and strategic political dialogue are being strengthened.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">He explained that Algiers\u2019s main objective for this State visit is attracting more Italian investment, including through the over 200 Italian companies actively working in Algeria.\n<ul>\n<li>On Thursday, the heads of Sonatrach and Eni \u2013 respectively the Algerian and Italian energy major \u2013 signed a Memorandum of Understanding aiming to accelerate the development of gas fields in Algeria and decarbonisation through green hydrogen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">It is plausible to assume that new investment channels \u2013 which are technically favoured by the new Algerian investment law \u2013 are being opened.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Algeria has made \u201csignificant strides in the knowledge economy,\u201d continued Mr Qureshi, and it also looks forward to benefiting from Italy\u2019s experience in SMEs, shipbuilding and the pharmaceutical industry.\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">A few months ago, Mr Tebboune sent a government delegation to Italy, to study the experience of emerging and small Italian companies in order to replicate it in Algeria, he added.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The Libyan issue.\u00a0<\/b>Algeria is seeking a new pragmatic relationship with Europe, based on mutual interest, that can drive transformation. It started with the economy, through gas, now it\u2019s set to expand along the two countries\u2019 alignment on third-party dossiers. Such as Libya.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Italy and Algeria feel the same way about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/decode39.com\/2839\/libyan-government-mezran\/\">the Libyan crisis<\/a>\u00a0and the need to hold presidential elections.
