{"id":68153,"date":"2023-01-17T14:30:47","date_gmt":"2023-01-17T13:30:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/?p=68153"},"modified":"2023-01-17T11:46:07","modified_gmt":"2023-01-17T10:46:07","slug":"algeria-among-early-movers-tackling-food-crisis-wef-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/en\/algeria-among-early-movers-tackling-food-crisis-wef-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Algeria among \u2018early movers\u2019 tackling food crisis: WEF report"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-highlight\">\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Algeria&#8217;s per capita food production &#8220;has more than doubled&#8221; in three years<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>Ghana, India and Vietnam supported farmer-allied SMEs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content\" data-io-article-url=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/2233501\/business-economy\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>DAVOS: Algeria and the Maghreb are among \u201cearly movers\u201d employing innovative technologies and agricultural practices to improve sustainability, a report by the World Economic Forum says.<\/p>\n<p>The Food, Nature and Health Transitions \u2013 Repeatable Country Models report defined actions and investments that can accelerate a country\u2019s transition towards more sustainable food systems with a lower impact on the climate and nature.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Algeria has \u201cmore than doubled its per capita food production since 2020\u201d through government programs and farming innovations, the report said. It added that it stands as an example to countries who wish to improve productivity, sustainability and food supply.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cTransforming food systems provide healthy and nutritious diets and dignified jobs for farmers and producers,\u201d said Gim Huay Neo, Managing Director of the WEF\u2019s Centre for Nature and Climate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis report shows how economic development with environment protection supports communities in climate adaptation and mitigation efforts,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>India, Ethiopia, Ghana, Vietnam, Canada, and New Zealand were also cited in the report.<\/p>\n<p>The report said that Ghana, India and Vietnam had unlocked and supported small and medium-sized enterprises, particularly those that are farmer-allied and operating in local food chains.<\/p>\n<p>Vietnam had meanwhile intensified rice production in a sustainable manner, while Canada and New Zealand had made their agriculture sectors more climate-friendly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDepending on the country context, different pathways could be adopted to transform our agrifood systems for improved food security and nutrition and assuring sustainability,\u201d said Maximo Torero Cullen, Chief Economist at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScaling up climate resilience and strengthening our food environment to promote healthy diets are two key interventions with positive impacts on food security, nature and health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen food fails, everything fails,\u201d added Geraldine Matchett, Co-Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Royal DSM, and Co-Chair of the CEO Alliance on Food, Nature and Health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must work to transform our food systems to be resilient, sustainable and healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farmers, according to the report, are more likely to adopt new practices if the economics work in their favor, but this requires action from many stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>Each of the \u201cearly mover\u201d profiles in the report illustrated how multiple actors and concurrent levers, across sectors, collaborate to enable large-scale transformation over time.
