TRANSLATING AS \u201cRocker of the Desert\u201d, La Rockeuse du D\u00e9sert<\/em> profiles septuagenarian Hasna El Becharia, Algeria\u2019s first woman to play the guitar-like guembri<\/em>.<\/p>\n

El Becharia is an Gnawa icon who\u2019s devoted her life to empower women of all ages, inspiring them to reclaim a musical tradition historically led by men.<\/p>\n

Full of rhythmic music, dazzling desert imagery, archival histories, and interviews with the pioneering guembri-player (see the trailer below), the film is directed by Quebec\u2019s Sara Nacer, who traces her heritage back to Algeria, is in town Sunday at The Cinematheque for a Q&A about the vibrant new documentary. Laura\u00a0Bustillos\u00a0J\u00e1quez provides the assured cinematography.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A singularly talented artist, she leads women to redefine their roles and challenge cultural norms, one musical performance at a time.<\/p>\n

Sara Nacer is a Canadian Algerian emerging filmmaker based in Montreal. Recognised in Montreal for her contribution to the promotion of cultural diversity, she has produced several major events and projects. She has also produced several sold-out concerts at La Place Des Arts in Montreal.<\/p>\n
