Tetis finally has an actual address and has exceled in his studies at Kasdi Merbah University in Ouargla, a city 500 miles south of Algiers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am from a low-income family in Zimbabwe,\u201d Tetis told Al-Fanar Media. \u201cGiven the country\u2019s instability and successive political crises, I decided to get my baccalaureate and find a way out. Algeria was my destination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For him, the UNIMED project was a lifeline. \u201cIt made me truly believe in a just world that provides education for all,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-integrating-refugees-into-higher-education\"><strong>Integrating Refugees into Higher Education\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Like other countries, Algeria took upon itself the task of integrating refugee students into its universities through projects like CI-RES.<\/p>\n<p>The three-year project, which officially concluded in January, has helped refugees from as far away as Palestine, in the Middle East; Zimbabwe, in southern Africa; and Western Sahara, the former Spanish colony in northwestern Africa where a group representing the local population is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewhumanitarian.org\/news-feature\/2023\/02\/01\/Western-Sahara-Morocco-Polisario-Sahrawi-UN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contesting Morocco\u2019s claims<\/a>\u00a0of sovereignty.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Also see:\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.al-fanarmedia.org\/2022\/06\/u-n-outlines-15-steps-for-helping-refugees-access-higher-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>U.N. Outlines 15 Steps for Helping Refugees Access Higher Education<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Ci-RES project received support from the European Commission under the Erasmus + programme.<\/p>\n<div id=\"fanar-ad-4917f72a9110ee39f8c548dda932a21a\" class=\"fanar-ad-4917f72a9110ee39f8c548dda932a21a fanar-ad-content_3\"><\/div>\n<p>Naouel Abdellatif Mami, vice-rector for external relations at Algeria\u2019s Mohamed Lamine Debaghine S\u00e9tif 2 University, was the project\u2019s coordinator.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cWe were lost. We did not know what to do; education doors were closed for us. Ci-RES then shone and revived our dreams. This project is the saviour for the future of thousands of refugees who left their homelands because of political crises, civil wars, and foreign interventions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite>Hama Nafe\u2019 Salama, a student from Western Sahara who studies law and administrative sciences at Algeria\u2019s Mohamed Lamine Debaghine S\u00e9tif 2 University.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Building institutional capacities for integrating refugees from widely differing countries of the Middle East and Africa into Algerian higher education was a challenge, Mami told Al-Fanar Media. Students faced problems on two levels: pedagogical and integrational.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey didn\u2019t know the environment and had no friends,\u201d she said. \u201cSome found the culture a bit different, others could not understand Arabic. Western Saharan students speak Spanish rather than French.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cThey all want to go back and live a normal life in their home countries, as life in camps is quite harsh. Moreover, they lack opportunities to do postgraduate studies as they cannot afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Also see:\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.al-fanarmedia.org\/2022\/01\/naouel-abdellatif-mami\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Naouel Abdellatif Mami Strives to Raise the Global Profile of Algeria\u2019s Setif 2 University<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Along with UNIMED and the Algerian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, S\u00e9tif 2 University was one of eight university partners in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciresproject.eu\/en\/the-project\/\">project<\/a>, four in Europe and four in Algeria.<\/p>\n<p>The European partners were Spain\u2019s University of La Rioja and University of A Coru\u00f1a, Italy\u2019s University of Bergamo, and France\u2019s University Paris 1 Panth\u00e9on Sorbonne. The other Algerian partners were Kasdi Merbah University in Ouargla, Abderahamane Mira University of Beja\u00efa, and Mouloud Maameri University of Tizi-Ouzou.<\/p>\n<p>Anne-Laurence Pastorini, the UNIMED referent for the project, said that welcoming refugee students and staff members is not the social responsibility of European or North American universities alone but also of universities in the Global South. \u201cThat\u2019s why UNIMED piloted this project in Algeria to support the universities here and elsewhere,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"fanar-ad-d7c793ca28f12003669ff09ef17ffbeb\" class=\"fanar-ad-d7c793ca28f12003669ff09ef17ffbeb fanar-ad-content_3\"><\/div>\n<h3 id=\"h-challenges-and-opportunities\"><strong>Challenges and Opportunities\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Hama Nafe\u2019 Salama is among a number of students from Western Sahara who came to Algeria in the hope of pursuing their higher education at one of the Ci-RES project\u2019s partner universities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were lost. We did not know what to do; education doors were closed for us,\u201d said Salama,\u00a0who studies law and administrative sciences at S\u00e9tif 2 University. \u201cCi-RES then shone and revived our dreams to pursue our education. This project is the saviour for the future of thousands of refugees who left their homelands because of political crises, civil wars, and foreign interventions.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cCi-RES is one of the most powerful full-impact projects at the personal individual level. Its specificity was the full involvement of students, rather than the usual focus on rectors, vice-rectors and other staff members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite>Anne-Laurence Pastorini, UNIMED referent for the project.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mahmoud Ali Hamad, another student from Western Saharan who is studying law at Abderrahmane Mira University of Beja\u00efa, said: \u201cThe most beautiful thing about this project is enabling the integrated refugee students of different nationalities to have the same university life with their fellow students, in terms of education, cultural activities, and accommodation. This does not make us feel like strangers or different at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sadio Coulibaly, a master\u2019s degree student from Mali at S\u00e9tif 2 University, said overcoming difficulties was a struggle at first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing from a very different country culturally, socially, and even educationally was hard,\u201d said Coulibaly, who is studying American and British literature and civilisation. \u201cBut soon I felt I was a son of this country. The university and this project treated us equally, with no differences between nationals and refugees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mali and neighbouring countries of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalr2p.org\/countries\/mali\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Central Sahel<\/a>, on Algeria\u2019s southern border, have been beset by a decade of unrest, and Coulibaly had despaired of continuing his education. Work became his utmost priority to help his family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UNIMED project and Dr. Mami brought us back to life, by enrolling into Algerian universities to receive our training from qualified professors,\u201d Coulibaly said. \u201cTo move from being a war refugee to being a university student, enjoying all the rights just like the country\u2019s nationals, is truly a unique a European university. \u201cI was about to lose hope in completing my education because of the situation back in Niger,\u201d said Aminou, who is now an outstanding student at Kasdi Merbah University in Ouargla.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-sports-and-linguistic-training\"><strong>Sports and Linguistic Training\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Mami, the vice-rector at S\u00e9tif 2 and the project\u2019s coordinator, said the project was helping a total of 20 refugees, five at each Algerian university. Ten academic staff members and 10 administrative staff members are also participating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe aim is to welcome and help integrate the refugees into the higher education system and take care of their enrollment and academic achievement,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe offered linguistic training and modules on human rights and law for refugees. \u00a0We also had concrete cultural, scientific, and sports activities, besides the integration in the professional world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arabic training was offered to non-native Arabic speakers. French, the most common language of instruction in Algerian universities, was offered to Western Saharan students who speak Spanish. We finally announced the best chef is Ci-RES project.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"fanar-ad-be1367543e6090593b2078b7f0812994\" class=\"fanar-ad-be1367543e6090593b2078b7f0812994 fanar-ad-content_3\"><\/div>\n<h3 id=\"h-a-focus-on-human-beings\"><strong>A Focus on Human Beings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ci-RES started in 2020, the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the pandemic lockdowns, however, the project succeeded being implemented within its initial time framework.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCi-RES is one of the most powerful full-impact projects at the personal individual level,\u201d said Anne-Laurence Pastorini, of UNIMED. \u201cIts specificity was the full involvement of students, rather than the usual focus on rectors, vice-rectors and other staff members.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cThe project\u2019s greatest success was in its focus on human beings.
