{"id":88397,"date":"2023-09-04T10:00:23","date_gmt":"2023-09-04T09:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/?p=88397"},"modified":"2023-09-04T09:48:04","modified_gmt":"2023-09-04T08:48:04","slug":"4-6-billion-year-old-meteorite-increases-our-understanding-of-the-early-solar-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/en\/4-6-billion-year-old-meteorite-increases-our-understanding-of-the-early-solar-system\/","title":{"rendered":"4.6-billion-year-old meteorite increases our understanding of the early solar system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An analysis of the approximately 4.6-billion-year-old meteorite Erg Chech 002, discovered in 2020 in the Erg Chech region of the Sahara Desert in Algeria, is presented in\u00a0<i>Nature Communications<\/i>.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-banner first-banner ads-336x280\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1449240174198-2\" data-google-query-id=\"CPKXlP3HkIEDFeKk1QodflsGkw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/4988204\/Phys_Story_InText_Box_0__container__\"><iframe id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/4988204\/Phys_Story_InText_Box_0\" tabindex=\"0\" title=\"3rd party ad content\" role=\"region\" name=\"google_ads_iframe_\/4988204\/Phys_Story_InText_Box_0\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" aria-label=\"Advertisement\" data-load-complete=\"true\" data-google-container-id=\"1\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In combination with previously published data, Aluminum-26 (<sup>26<\/sup>Al), a\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/radioactive+isotope\/\" rel=\"tag\">radioactive isotope<\/a>\u00a0that was present within the meteorite when it formed, is found to have been spread unevenly throughout our solar system. The findings increase our understanding of the early solar system and may improve the accuracy of determining the ages of very old meteorites.<\/p>\n<p>Erg Chech 002 is an andesitic achondrite, a type of stony meteorite among the oldest known of to date.\u00a0<sup>26<\/sup>Al was a major heat source for early planetary melting and Erg Chech 002&#8217;s old age provides an opportunity to further explore the initial distribution of\u00a0<sup>26<\/sup>Al within the early solar system. Whether\u00a0<sup>26<\/sup>Al is distributed evenly throughout the early solar system is important for determining the ages of meteorites, and understanding the early\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/solar+system\/\" rel=\"tag\">solar system<\/a>, but is debated.<\/p>\n<p>Evgenii Krestianinov and colleagues analyzed Erg Chech 002 and determined its lead-isotopic age as about 4.566 billion years old. They then combined this finding with existing data for this meteorite and compared this to other very old meteorites that crystallized from melts.
