opportunities in Africa<\/h3>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateequityinternational.com\/private-equity-gears-up-for-a-bigger-role-in-africas-energy-transition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Private equity funds are looking to Africa<\/a>\u00a0to provide energy transition investment opportunities, and small-scale projects not connected to national grids are particularly attractive, Saad Ul Islam, investment director for infrastructure equity at British International Investment, tells Private Equity International.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/africa-energy-outlook-2022\/key-findings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More than 600 million people still lack access to electricity in Africa<\/a>, almost half the population, and those with access do not always receive 24-hour reliability, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"st__content-block class=\"st__content-block--image-figcaption\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>But there is a growing trend of private equity firms playing a growing role in supporting the provision of energy services and technology, according to Ul Islam.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>\u201cOur view is that the energy transition in Africa will be mainly decentralized,\u201d investment director Ben Hughes at Camco says, and these lower-cost projects are \u201cmuch easier to deploy and finance\u201d as a result.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Blackouts and erratic power supply from national grids have led more homes and businesses to turn their backs on more traditional models of energy supply and embrace private-sector energy solutions instead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"2-eu-strikes-multiple-energy-deals-with-middle-east\" class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--heading st__content-block--heading-2\">2. EU strikes multiple energy deals with Middle East<\/h3>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>The EU, in efforts to pivot its energy reliance away from Russia, is embarking on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/2370446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">campaign to find more secure energy sources<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>More than a third of new EU-nation energy deals since the invasion of Ukraine are with Middle Eastern countries, with the UAE leading the way, writes Andrew Hammond, Associate at LSE IDEAS at the London School of Economics for Arab News.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/ecfr.eu\/special\/energy-deals-tracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Of the 122 agreements<\/a>\u00a0put in place since March 2022, the US and UAE lead with 21, followed by Azerbaijan (10), Norway (nine), Algeria (nine), Qatar (eight), Serbia (five), Egypt (five), Saudi Arabia (four), and Japan, Israel, Namibia, Georgia, Angola, Namibia and Libya (all with two).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>From the EU side, Germany has the largest number of agreements, at 27, followed by Italy with 18 and Hungary with 14.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>But Hammond says the tracker indicates this success will complicate the EU 27\u2019s energy transition, as new gas infrastructure will take years to secure value for money, and so must be part of the bloc\u2019s energy mix for a corresponding amount of time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>\u201cEU nations will need to do much more to invest in clean energy infrastructure if they are to decarbonize their economies, sustainably, in the next decade,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"3-news-in-brief-more-energy-stories-from-around-the-world\" class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--heading st__content-block--heading-2\">3. Supply has been curtailed, primarily by Russia and Saudi Arabia, which have voluntarily reduced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/goldman-sachs-says-opec-can-sustain-brent-80-105-range-2024-2023-09-20\/#:~:text=Saudi%20Arabia%20and%20Russia%20on,deficit%20through%20the%20fourth%20quarter.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">daily production by a combined 1.3 million barrels<\/a>. Geopolitics has also played a part \u2013 the invasion of Ukraine has disrupted the nuclear power supply chain as Russia is a major player in converting and enriching uranium, all of which could mean higher uranium prices in future, the\u00a0<i>Financial Times<\/i>\u00a0writes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>A new power system that turns\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/alanohnsman\/2023\/09\/07\/this-company-is-turning-waste-into-clean-hydrogen-and-electricity-and-water\/?ss=energy&amp;sh=7392fbf06b08\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">waste gas into electricity, clean hydrogen and water<\/a>\u00a0has been deployed in southern California.
