{"id":9840,"date":"2021-02-21T07:24:34","date_gmt":"2021-02-21T12:24:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/?p=9840"},"modified":"2021-02-21T07:24:34","modified_gmt":"2021-02-21T12:24:34","slug":"africa-to-see-a-huge-renewable-energy-boom-driven-by-egypt-and-algeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/en\/africa-to-see-a-huge-renewable-energy-boom-driven-by-egypt-and-algeria\/","title":{"rendered":"Africa to see a huge renewable energy boom driven by Egypt and Algeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Source: africanreview.com ,on Thursday, 28 January 2021<\/p>\n<p>The continent\u2019s capacity is forecast to reach 16.8 GW in 2020, add another 5.5 GW in 2021, and further climb to 51.2 GW in 2025, led by growth in solar and wind projects in\u00a0<strong>Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Ethiopia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At present, South Africa leads the continent in terms of installed renewable energy capacity with 3.5 GW of wind, 2.4 GW of utility solar, and a solar-dominant 1 GW pipeline of projects in development.\u00a0<strong>Egypt<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Morocco<\/strong>\u00a0are in second and third place in terms of solar capacity with 1.6 GW and 0.8 GW, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 40 out of 50 African countries have installed \u2013 or plan to install \u2013 wind or solar projects. And although the learning curve may be steep for first-time market entrants with sizable development pipelines, inexperienced players will be able to leverage the lessons learned in Egypt, South Africa and Morocco and implement this knowledge into development plans.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Algeria<\/strong> <strong>will see the most renewable growth in Africa towards 2025, increasing capacity from just 500MW in 2020 to almost 2.9GW in 2025<\/strong>. The increase will come primarily from one mega-project, the four gigawatts\u00a0<strong>Tafouk 1 Mega Solar Project<\/strong>, which will be developed in five phases of 800MW capacity each, to be tendered between 2020 and 2024.<strong>\u00a0Rystad Energy<\/strong>\u00a0expects three of the tendered projects with 2.4GW of capacity will be commissioned by 2025.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Tunisia will also see formidable growth, skyrocketing from 350 MW of renewable capacity in 2020 to 4.5 GW in 2025<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9844 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/trew.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/trew.jpg 500w, https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/trew-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jazairhope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/trew-210x136.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The additions will come from larger solar plants, such as the 2 GW\u00a0TuNur Mega Project, which is currently in the early\u00a0stages of development and is expected to come on line by 2025.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of speed,\u00a0<strong>Egypt<\/strong>\u00a0has been one of the quickest African nations to install solar and wind since 2017, and currently has approximately three gigawatts of installed capacity.
