Algeria was first in the Maghreb, second in Africa, and third in the Arab world, in terms of the number of education institutions classified in the latest edition of Times Higher Education’s Young University Rankings for 2023, the Algerian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research said in a statement this week. The ranking, produced by the same British higher-education magazine that publishes the annual THE World University Rankings, evaluates the world’s best universities that are 50 years old or younger.
The ministry said 11 Algerian institutions were included in this year’s ranking, up from nine in 2022. Ferhat Abbas Setif 1 University was the highest-ranked Algerian institution, placing 98th at the global level, first in the Maghreb, and second at the African level, the statement said. The University of Guelma was also among the top 500 universities.
