Consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme l\u2019un des endroits les plus arides au monde, le Sahara n\u2019a pas toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9sertique. Une r\u00e9cente d\u00e9couverte a r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019un ancien r\u00e9seau de rivi\u00e8res souterraines, t\u00e9moin d\u2019anciens et gigantesques cours d\u2019eau.<\/strong><\/p>\n

.La d\u00e9couverte a \u00e9t\u00e9 faite par des chercheurs fran\u00e7ais gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des images fournies par un satellite japonais, qui a observ\u00e9 sous les terres d\u00e9sertiques de l\u2019ouest du Sahara, plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment en Mauritanie, les traces d\u2019un ancien fleuve s\u2019\u00e9talant sur plusieurs centaines de kilom\u00e8tres.<\/p>\n

D\u2019apr\u00e8s les chercheurs, le cours d\u2019eau pourrait provenir d\u2019un ancien fleuve, prenant sa source des massifs de l\u2019Atlas et du Hoggar et s\u2019\u00e9talant du Sahara occidental \u00e0 Tamanrasset.\u00a0Ils estiment que le cours d\u2019eau allait jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la mer pendant la p\u00e9riode humide africaine durant les 245 000 derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es.<\/p>\n

Le fleuve aurait continu\u00e9 \u00e0 s\u2019\u00e9couler il y a 5 000 ans encore, permettant aux populations humaines, \u00e0 la faune et la flore de la r\u00e9gion de prosp\u00e9rer. Si le cours d\u2019eau existait encore aujourd\u2019hui, il serait le 21e plus grand du monde, pr\u00e9cisent les chercheurs.<\/p>\n

L\u2019hypoth\u00e8se de l\u2019existence d\u2019un fleuve dans la zone indiqu\u00e9e avait \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9mise il y a plusieurs ann\u00e9es par des scientifiques, lorsque des s\u00e9diments et un profond canyon sous-marin ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9couverts pr\u00e8s des c\u00f4tes mauritaniennes.
